Was the train slowing for Lewes station or still accelerating away from it?

Probably because that's what NR said

seems highly implausible.

Ah. BBC have just reported that it was 14:24 Victoria to Eastbourne,
so it was slowing for Lewes station. Unfortunately their map doesn't
show the location - ie how *far* north of the station it was.

RTT has it 26 late at Lewis, whereas Opentraintimes map shows it just
north of the station, having negotiated the Hamsey level crossing.
It's not unusual for real-time information to claim a train is at a
station, when it hasn't quite got there yet.
Looks as if they might be able to re-open platforms 3, 4 and 5 later,
with just platforms 1 & 2 awaiting recovery of the derailed train.

One of the links above has a map - sorry, canrCOt remember which one - but it seems to be about a mile north of the station, where the railway runs parallel to the River Ouse.

The front unit looks to be the GBR liviered one. I bet a lot of people
are happy that that one didn't fall over.

Would I be right in thinking the rear unit that derailed was a 379,
recently transferred to SN, and still mainly in GN livery?

No, it was an ex-C2C 387.

A statement from Network Rail and Southern Rail.
The railway between Lewes and Haywards Heath will remain closed for at
least another ten days while teams recover the derailed train and begin repairs to the railway.

I knew that "by 10 pm" (on the day of the crash) was wildly optimistic.
10 more days is a long time. NR must have serious concerns about the
state of the trackbed and estimate that it will take a long time to
remove the carriages and relay new track.
It will be interesting to read the RAIB report, in the light of the
track reportedly being inspected (and presumably passing inspection)
the day before.

Most reports I've read said the track which was inspected was the
northbound side only, not the southbound one with the derailment.

Ah, hadn't seen that it was northbound only.
Does "inspection" normally mean with a track inspection train or by
walking the line?

The reports don't say, but the flying-banana seems most likely, because
if you were walking I don't understand why you couldn't do both sides at >once.

Human train drivers passing over the track at least every 30 minutes
in each direction provides a comprehensive, if not formal, inspection. >Whatever the cause of the derailment there was (so far as we know)
nothing that stood out to the drivers of earlier services.

The drivers get used to the "roller coaster tracks" for example on the
Fen Line

And that is a very important point: drivers of earlier services would
have seen and felt any distortion of the track, and reported it.
