Wow - there canrCOt ever have been many trains between Euston and the West Country or South and West Wales!

Is this due to engineering works diversions?

Yes, the GWML is closed that weekend for OOC station construction work
(there will be eight conventional platforms at ground level, and six high
speed platforms at the lower level, which have already been constructed).
The huge completed station will be wider than many stations are long!

TheyrCOve already started laying the platform tracks for the relief lines through the station, just to the north of the current formation, but
sometimes need access to the current running lines. There will be a series
of such closures, as six of the eight diverted tracks and platforms are constructed and connected. Finally, the two main lines will be closed on at least a couple of occasions for the lines to be diverted into their new platforms.

The whole process will take several years, but is due to be completed long before any HS2 trains enter service. So GWR and EL passengers will be travelling through the eight new conventional platforms for up to a decade before they come into use. I wonder if NR/GBR will bother installing things like departure boards, escalators and lifts with the platforms, or wait
till just before the station is finally due to open?

Something similar will be happening at Tempsford on the ECML, where the
ground level platforms and loops will be constructed years before the EWR arrives to use the high level platforms.

The Irony is that when the GWR was first planned for economy reasons the intention was to terminate at Euston sharing it with the London and
Birmingham , the junction would have been at Willesden and the design of
the original Euston allowed space for GWR platforms .
Fairly early on lease terms could not be agreed so the GWR constructed a temporary terminus at Bishops Road and then Paddington followed built in a grand style which was what I K Brunel had wanted to do in the first
place. Great Engineer , but spent other peoples money with abandon. Traffic
on both lines soon built up enough that the original Euston would never
    have coped anyway.
Almost forgotten history is the GWR also once had a share in Victoria
Station as it was nearer to the City of London and Broad gauge trains once
went there via the West London Railway and Clapham. Paddington being seen
as a little out of the way is not a new thing. The GWR ceased using
Victoria during WW1 never to return but it wasnrCOt till the 1930rCOs they sold their interest to the Southern .
