Can anyone recommend an app of means/advice of seeking out advanced
fares and offers in the UK? I think it's a minefield.

I see that Roland has already recommended trainsplit.com, but nationalrail.co.uk also gives all the through fares it can, including
cheaper advance tickets. All the (major?) train company web sites also
    offer all companiesrCO fares, AFAICT.

I think all sites selling tickets have to offer all tickets, but some
have much less easy-to-use search engines.

Most of the major TOC sites are pants. And they secretly guide you
towards the tickets they want to sell, not the ones you want to buy.

Most of them should be advance fares.

My understanding is that only ToC ticket offices are required to offer impartial ticketing.

I agree with Roland that trainsplit (or similar) provides the cheapest
overall fares. The different split sites can provide different routing
    and, sometimes, slightly different fares.

That's right, convenient they are closing many of those down, isn't it!

The impartial ticketing requirement doesn't apply to TVMs or tickets
    sold on-the-train.

I agree with Roland that trainsplit (or similar) provides the cheapest >overall fares. The different split sites can provide different routing

    There's three kinds of split:

    1) Picking stations where the pence-per-mile changes gear due to being
far enough away from major metropolitan areas.

    2) Different routing than absolutely direct. For example London to
Nottingham via Grantham instead of the currently beleaguered EMR.
A subset is using cheaper TOCs, like Hull trains instead of LNER.

    3) Splitting at stations passed after off-peak fares become valid, when
starting the journey during Peak time.

It's also possible to get very cheap Advance fares by taking byzantine "TOC+connections" routes. I think the most I ever achieved was three
changes of train [Nottingham to Plymouth, via Leicester, Birmingham and Reading for about -u5], with very little of the trip on the "TOC" in
    question.

Another I did was Glasgow to Nottingham, changing at Carlise, going via Appleby, and changing again at Leeds. That was about u20.

brfares.com, try Cambridge to Blackpool North, and you'll see lots of
    tickets marked "AWC and Connections".

Which means you'll get an Avanti seat reservation from Euston to
Preston, but can make your own way down to Euston and onwards from
Preston, on any reasonable local connecting services.
