• Jinxed the trains AGAIN

Have a friend due to be arriving for lunch on a Thameslink train. Which
has been cancelled. Trying to work out an alternative routing.

Of course, it was completely and utterly predictable, round of applause
    for Thameslink!!

If people are arriving for lunch, then an hour late can sometimes be significant (especially if a table has been booked, other guests who
live locally invited). Some restaurants get quite cross if you arrive
more then 15 minutes late for a booking, especially for something like
    Sunday lunch.

The good news is, if the third train gets in just 25 seconds after it
    should, there's a big delay-repay due.

Can you reasonably do Brighton to Cambridge without going via the M25 and
the Dartford Crossing? The latter has always held me up going north. And I
used the M11 north from Stansted the other day and that was grim.

Roland has two competing viewpoints. HerCOs previously objected to levels of subsidy, and really doesnrCOt seem to like the levels of Swiss railway
subsidy. But to provide the fault free running of the railway which he is
also demanding a vast amount more subsidy would be required. Both the Swiss
and the British get the railway quality that they pay for.

Roland has two competing viewpoints. HerCOs previously objected to levels of >subsidy,

Only the passenger-derived subsidy which flows from south to north,
giving stupidly cheap fares to passengers on routes like Northern, at
    the expense of London commuters.

and really doesnrCOt seem to like the levels of Swiss railway subsidy.

Switzerland is such a different country, any comparison is invalid.

But to provide the fault free running of the railway which he is also >demanding a vast amount more subsidy would be required. Both the Swiss
and the British get the railway quality that they pay for.

I think the UK government subsidy is about right, it's the
passenger-derived one (see above) which I object to.

The good news is, if the third train gets in just 25 seconds after it

    Six minutes late!

So that's four and a half hours from Brighton to Cambridge, someone know
is seriously thinking about buying a car.

Can you reasonably do Brighton to Cambridge without going via the M25 and
the Dartford Crossing? The latter has always held me up going north. And I >used the M11 north from Stansted the other day and that was grim.

Maybe in the early hours when there is a good chance of the M25 being
    closed anyway.

They seem to have been on regular cancellations for the last month or

instead of half-hourly and the Peterborough train preceding mine to
Bedford on Saturday night is usually cancelled.

I thought the summer timetable reductions were official, on both TL and
    AWC?

Looking at e.g. last Saturday evening, the missing trains from
Deptford to London are still showing on RTT but cancelled.

Can't parse that. Are you saying it's possible in the early hours to not
use the M25 and Dartford. In which case what route are you suggesting?

The M25 is often unavailable after midnight on the southern side. That
can be mitigated by a lack of traffic in the more central parts of
Greater London. Over toward the east (depending on your end points) it
can sometimes be quicker going via the City or Blackwall or
Rotherhithe Tunnels in the early hours.
