People who have lived there since the state was founded? Many of them would not have been born since their forebears would have been annihilated by "neighbours".

    Oh really ?

So how do you account for the fact that by 1939, there were in fact
    445,000 Jews living in Palestine ? (1)

Clearly another topic you both know absolutely nothing about,
and have no real intention of finding out about for yourself.

Clearly that week you spent back then, studying in that
university library must have been a very unpleasant experience
for you, for some reason or other. Given your very obvious
determination to avoid all books and libraries, ever since.

But then as your degree was only in wiring plugs, I very much
doubt books figured all that much, in any case. Just the odd
regulations handbook and books of tables etc.

To which "ad hom attack" are you referring? I am certainly not in the
habit of carrying out such attacks (which I rather think is a commonly
    held view on usenet).

But observing that someone as knowledgeable on the history of the State
of Israel as you appear to be cannot credibly be unaware of the 1948
attack upon Israel by (some, if not all of) its neighbouring states is
    not an ad-hom attack.

About 850,000-900,000 Jews were displaced, expelled, or forced to flee from Arab and Muslim-majority countries in the period following Israel's establishment in 1948.

Why would you mention one and not the other?

There are only two possible explanations that I can see, namely woeful ignorance about a subject you often express views, or bigotry. Of course, you may have another explanation I have not thought of?

Or another explanation might well be, that unlike out of a total of

    Er no.

I deliberately selected that passage (so at to provide context) and then deliberately chose to emphasise Mt Nugent's use of the phrase "anti semitic"
in relation to the present "local difficulties" in the Middle East; so as
to illustrate the obvious limitations in his thinking in this regard

While with all due respect, what you take to be my intention, is really

Laughable. You claim to have all the relevant knowledge of happenings in

The attack on the hotel clearly didn't cause the Nakba. It did have a
profound effect on the British, though. Greatly oversimplifying, there
    were two causes:

    a) There was undoubtedly Jewish violence against the Arabs.

    b) Most Arabs at the time expected that the 4 mechanised Arab armies
that invaded Palestine in 1948 would win quickly, and eliminate the
Jewish population. The Arab civilians were therefore more prepared to
flee the war zone, expecting they could soon return.

That wasn't the point I was making. Gaines claimed the Arabs had been in occupation for 1000 prior to 1948. I wasn't disputing that. But he
claimed that meant they owned the land, which I was disputing.

I was just looking at years of occupation, in Gaines's simplistic
fashion. So, over the last 150 years the Jews have been in occupation
for 75 years and the Arabs 75 years also. So, that's 50/50.

On the other hand if you look back 5000 years, the Jews have been in occupation roughly 4000 of them. So, that's 80/20.

Essentially, the Gaines approach doesn't prove anything, as you can get
any answer you want, just by choosing the time-scale.

To be fair, that bit isn't remotely strange or asymmetrical. It's how
things always work. If your ancestors stole the land a millennium ago,
it's yours now. If you stole the land a decade ago, it is not yours.
This isn't special to Israel and it isn't strange or arbitrary.

To be fair, that bit isn't remotely strange or asymmetrical. It's how
things always work. If your ancestors stole the land a millennium ago,
it's yours now. If you stole the land a decade ago, it is not yours.
This isn't special to Israel and it isn't strange or arbitrary.

It might have something to do with the agreements on setting up the UN about future rules of acquisition of land too. It is a shame they were ignored.

I think they left more willingly and in greater numbers because they
expected to return. Many left with keys and deeds to their properties.
    Clearly expecting to return quickly.

The reasons they left were multifold. It was partly fear of the terror campaign against them by the Jewish terrorists of the period. It was
partly urban collapse due to the invasion. Partly the chaos of war. Some
were asked by Arab forces to leave a particular area.

To some extent there were rumours and panic that exaggerated the true
    danger from terrorism.

They are refugees because they have *no right of return* to the house/village/country where their family lived not only just
80 years, but possibly for the preceding 2000 years.

Whereas any Jewish person living anywhere in the world, has had an
*automatic right of return, despite their having left there 2000#
years ago; to live in that country, and even possibly that village
    and that house.

*And how do they know ? Jews and Palestinians are almost genetically
identical. You could almost call them cousins. Judaism was among
the first examples of *Corporate Identity* as applied to a religion.
Having been exiled from Palestine they needed to *write everything
down* in scrolls and latterly books * (an idea later copied of course
)so as to preserve their cultural identity.

People who stayed in one place never needed to do this.
Individuals cou;d have stopped being Jews at any time they
liked over the past 2000 years had they so chose. They could
have abandoned their religion as many possibly did,
But those that kept the religion even if they'd lived in NY for
three generations, having moved from there from Poland could
prove; it as it was all *written down*.

Whereas their *country cousins* who'd stayed back on the farm in
Palestine and not gone much anywhere except into town occasionally
for the last 2000 years ago couldn't really prove much at all.

    * Which then gave them a big advantage when books became important in
    all sorts of fields,

    bb

Anyway thank you for posting; as I'd somehow completely overlooked the
    "right of return" aspect.

If a refugee returns to their home country, their refugee status is
lost but the ability to return is not how refugee is defined.

The main point I was making is that "refugee camps 78 years later" is
far less of a hardship than it might sound. YouTube street tours of
pre-war Gaza show a European level of affluence with no tents.

The main point I was making is that "refugee camps 78 years later" is
far less of a hardship than it might sound. YouTube street tours of
pre-war Gaza show a European level of affluence with no tents.

Gaza was never a refugee camp. It has ben a disputed territory
under autonomous Palestine control, Egyption control, Israeli
control, Palestinian Control, Israeli control etc. etc. ever since
1949. The standard of living, the buildings etchings were totally
dependant on who was in control and for how long, and whether
the Port of Gaza and the land borders were subject to a
blockade by either Egypt, or Isreal, and for how long..

If a refugee returns to their home country, their refugee status is
lost but the ability to return is not how refugee is defined.

I think everyone would agree that the conditions were better in Gaza
"pre-war" (presumably meaning before October 2023) than they are now.

Whether they were so much better as to be "European level of affluence",
    I have no idea.

I doubt a substantial portion of Gaza's current housing was built
before 1948 when the population was only 60,000.

The economy of Gaza was tiny, so the buildings and goods shown were
    purchased with foreign aid.

I don't know what would make you say that.

Gaza's history of habitation dates back 5,000 years, making it one

They were already living in a city, when your ancestors were
still living in caves. And had to wait another 3000 years for
the Romans to show up and actually start building towns and
roads. While the best you could still manage, was covering
yourselves in blue paint, and throwing stones at them.

I doubt a substantial portion of Gaza's current housing was built
before 1948 when the population was only 60,000.

Whats the got to do with the fact that Gaze city isn't a refugee
    camp as you formerly believed

I mentioned: "The economy of Gaza was tiny, so the buildings and goods
shown were purchased with foreign aid". How much accomodation shown in
this video was not funded by aid?

Why should any of it have been ?

The economy of Monaco is tiny as well.

Have you watched any Youtube videos of Monaco ?

Ironically, just as you started posting back in ULM once more.
Presumably you have got over your reluctance to use ULM?

Yes, "Billy" was rambling a bit then.

He does rather like to go off-topic. Maybe to distract from a weak
    argument?

No. It was spellcheck generated error as confirmed by my follow up post.

Indeed it was once I noticed.

Seems like he's blown another fuse on ULM

IMHO if he doesn't want questions about his family
then he shouldnt be using them prop up his arguments

Never mind approving his own defamatory posts
