• ULM is 22 years old

How time flies. ULM was created in 2004 with the invaluable assistance
of Richard Ashton, who died in 2016.

Do we still need a moderated usenet legal discussion group for the UK?
Should we let it die now? Rather than wait for the moderators to die
    one by one?

I shall put a candle on the chocolate eclair I am about to eat. :-)

    > Do we still need a moderated usenet legal discussion group for the UK?

I think we do. Others may have differing opinions.

Should we let it die now?

No, I do not think we should. Again, others may feel differently.

Rather than wait for the moderators to die
    one by one?

I am more than two decades away from state pension age, (although my
private pensions can be drawn much sooner).

I have no plans to die, but then does anyone?

I hope you are OK Todal?

I'm a little surprised that {R} was involved, but that just goes to
show that none of us know the other to a very great degree.

I did enjoy his comments about gaining control of the domestic telephone
line and keeping it for as long as he wanted back in the days of Demon
    dial-up.

You mean you're not nurturing a cohort of new, young apprentice moderators?

If you have the energy to continue, ULM is at least entertaining and occasionally instructive for the few of us who participate. And there are obviously a huge number of lurkers who benefit.

I think I'm right in saying that the majority of new recruits only last

Of course, from some points of view kill-filing is just as oppressive as moderation; making unpopular posters feel unsafe by unfairly failing to read their contributions. And, in reality, sharing killfiles *is* just as

How time flies. ULM was created in 2004 with the invaluable
assistance of Richard Ashton, who died in 2016.

I'm a little surprised that {R} was involved, but that just goes to >>>>>>> show that none of us know the other to a very great degree.

I am surprised that you are surprised!

I suspect that he assumed that Richard would share his bizarre hatred >>>>> of moderated groups.

I am surprised that he hated moderated groups given that he wrote a
moderation system. IIRC it had some interesting features but he never
shared the source code and it died with him.

Brian has a bizarre hatred of moderated groups, not Richard.

Richard of course had a not entirely bizarre hatred of those whom he
regarded as inappropriate posters. He think he may sometimes have
been a tiny bit too intolerant of humanity's rich diversity.

    Do you mean "fuckwits"? ;-)

    A rather broad category.

Nothing to stop anyone from using uk.legal, a classic case of what
happens in the absence of censorship (well, moderation).

I occasionally look in there, the S:N ratio is very low because
people ran away to moderation instead of standing up and fighting
    using their newsreaders.

Of course, from some points of view kill-filing is just as oppressive
as moderation; making unpopular posters feel unsafe by unfairly
failing to read their contributions. And, in reality, sharing
killfiles *is* just as oppressive as moderation.

I don't share killfiles, and as I'm sure you're aware in order to
decide you don't want to see someone's contributions you need to have
read some of those before you choose to killfile the poster.

I used to use Brian H-K's dictum of reading the whole of a newsgroup
for 6 months before starting to post in it, although that advice was
    for a better time.

Discussion of "Freedom of Speech" is complex.

My USA-ian late wife was an expert in that (with a Journalism degree it
was a formal subject at Univeristy).

It doesn't include 'Shouting Fire in a crowded theatre' or in more

But it has always been light-touch moderation. And if you feel that any
post has been wrongly accepted or rejected you have the option of
    complaining to this group, u.n.n.m

Complaints are often reasonable and justified. Sometimes a moderator
will say that he thinks a rejected post ought to have been accepted. Or
might apologise for the decision he took.

    I didn't expect {R} to do anything.

So, your surprise is that he did something rather than nothing?

In fact {R} noticed the squabbling and threats and doxing that were
taking place in uk.legal and emailed me to offer his "modbot" if I
thought it would be useful. He explained how to create a moderated
group, the steps that had to be taken. I wrote the raison d'etre. His
modbot certainly had some flaws. It wasn't as secure as it ought to have
been. He never told me he was terminally ill with cancer, which I only discovered when the modbot had stopped working and I was trying to
contact him. By which time he had died and seemingly nobody at Gradwell
was in a position to maintain the modbot.

I don't know how many regulars we had who posted to ULM in the early
years compared with now. I don't suppose there are now very many. That's
why I asked if ULM is still useful. If there was an equivalent forum, a website or a Reddit group or whatever people nowadays use, I'd probably consider using that. Somewhere to have calm, respectful discussions
    about legal topics.

    There is https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/ but I wouldn't
say it was a substitute for uk.legal.moderated. The moderation
    is *far* harsher there.

And news.individual.net is to cease its service on 30 September 2027

Suggestions for alternative usenet services would be welcome.

It would be nice to prove them wrong.

I wonder how many accounts it has. If they've all got to move, can the
other news servers handle that number? I use e-s for my main Usenet
    access, with solani in reserve.

I used to use albasani, but that disappeared a few years ago.

Since the 1980s, computers have got thousands of times faster,
disks have got thousands of times larger, and Usenet has got
smaller. You could probably serve all worldwide Usenet clients

I absolutely do not! And the main issue with running a news server
is not so much the time setting it up (although that might be a
hassle to arrange the incoming and outgoing feeds with other news
server administrators) as the maintenance involved in keeping it
    running...

Indeed. I sometimes think that Ray (Banana) should keep a timesheet
recording all the admin work he does on the e-s server, and publish it
now and again to let all its users see how much time he spends on it.
