• So what's the old chart from 2003 supposed to be about?

    From Chris Brown@extreme_rice@yahoo.com to uk.music.charts on Sun Aug 16 09:11:08 2020
    From Newsgroup: uk.music.charts

It's not why I chose it, but there was a thread about One-Hit Wonders on Twitter recently and somebody posted a list which included the person who's at Number One in this very chart... with a different song.
In fairness there are a couple of one-hit wonders in here, but also some people proving they weren't.
Also that very mid-2000s phenomenon of Dance 12" EPs with one common track to make them eligible for the chart. And two of the least remembered boybands to have chart success. And Madonna's in the chart on her birthday.

    Chart dated 16th August 2003

Quite a sad chart for me as this chart fell into the week when my Gran
was buried. So while there's a lot of songs here that I love I've also
got very bittersweet memories of the time.

The date this chart was announed was a very strange day. The south
recorded record temperatures as the mercury climbed to 38.5c (101F)
while here in the north east we had the freakiest weather with a
torrential downpour in the morning which left my estate under two feet
of water and my kitchen soaking wet. The damage was done by the drains
all flooding. Teeside came off the worst. I can remember the crazy wind blowing outside. yet by mid afternoon it was red hot.

My Granny's funeral was in December 2018, so the chart was mostly old Christmas songs anyway.

1.-a-a (1) Blu Cantrell ft Sean Paul-a-a-a Breathe

A great song that i still love. Sold almost 50k to stay at the top.

I thought she was going to be a one hit wonder until this happened.

2.-a (NE) Ultrabeat-a-a-a Pretty Green Eyes

    A good dance track.

I never liked it but it's not as bad as I thought.

3.-a (NE) The Cheeky Girls-a-a-a Hooray Hooray (It's A Cheeky Holiday)

The third of three top 3 hits for the awful duo.

And the second with the word "Cheeky" in the title IIRC.

4.-a (NE) Mark Owen-a-a-a Four Minute Warning

    I quite liked this one.

I like how he breaks the fourth wall by referring to the duration of the
    song itself.

5.-a-a (2) Lumidee-a-a-a Never Leave You (Uh Oooh Uh Oooh)

    And this one.

has that beat that seemed to be on everything for about a year.

6.-a (NE) Pharrell Williams ft Jay-Z-a-a-a Frontin'

    Don't recall the actual song.

IIRC Pharrell's first official lead credit.

    7.-a-a (3) Robbie Williams-a-a-a Something Beautiful

His time as the UK's top act would soon be up. He would still have big
hits but sometimes he would struggle to make the top 10.

He did sound quite tired of being a pop star by now.

8.-a-a (4) Daniel Bedingfield-a-a-a Never Gonna Leave Your Side

    Very bland.

Amazingly his third Number One single.

9.-a (NE) Jason Nevins/UKNY ft Holly James-a-a-a I'm In Heaven

    Nope, don't recall.

Loosely based on 'Human Nature', apparently.

    10.-a (5) Beyonc|--a-a-a Crazy In Love

    Great dance / R&B track.

Everyone likes this, even though Jay-Z's bit is slightly rubbish.

11.-a (6) Benny Benassi pts the Biz-a-a-a Satisfaction

I quite liked the song but the video is quite offensive.

Very much of its time, not in a good way.

    12. (10) XTM & DJ Chucky pts Annia-a-a-a Fly On The Wings of Love

    The Chipmunks strike again!

I don't know whether the original was released as a single here.

    13.-a (9) Evanescence-a-a-a Bring Me To Life

    Great song.

I think I prefer the version without the shouty bloke.

    14. (NE) Fabolous-a-a-a Can't Let You Go
    15.-a (8) Craig David-a-a-a Spanish
    16.-a (7) Kosheen-a-a-a All In My Head

    Three I don't recall.

I don't remember Fabolous except as a name, I remember the Craig David
song was standard RnB but with some vaguely flamenco guitars (hence the
title) and I mainly remember being disappointed by the Kosheen track.

    17. (12) Deepest Blue-a-a-a Deepest Blue

    Another good dance track.

And when they did the follow-up they had to think of a title for it.

    18. (11) Stereophonics-a-a-a Maybe Tomorrow

    Good atmospheric record.

One of their few tracks from this century that I like, for that very
reason. I'm not sure there's even that much of a song in there, but it's
    a good production.

    19. (NE) Elbow-a-a-a Fallen Angel

    Another I don't recall.

One of their chugging sort of songs instead of the ballad ones. Also has
a sort of squawk sound at the start to grab your attention.

    20. (NE) Kelly Rowland-a-a-a Train On A Track

I recognise the title but not the song.

Not very memorable in all honesty.

    45. (35) 50 Cent-a-a-a In Da Club

This one was still being played on Radio 1 two years later.

It feels like it's never gone away.

    54. (42) Girls Aloud-a-a-a No Good Advice

I still quite like Girls Aloud. Including this single.

I don't think it's the best thing they did.

    64. (46) Goldfrapp-a-a-a Strict Machine

    Good song.

Not their most original, but memorable.

    70. (57) Electric Six-a-a-a Gay Bar

Great song and a humourous video video!

Also the theme song of a controversial (and short-lived) feature on
    Scott Mills' Radio 1 show.
