• But with you by my side, I can face this old chart from 1988

    From Chris Brown@extreme_rice@yahoo.com to uk.music.charts on Sun Aug 9 12:45:24 2020

Not a lot of interest in the 2013 chart last week, but this is 25 years earlier in a more core era. I'd already decided to do this before one of
the tracks became part of a viral online video yesterday.

1-a-a-a (1) Yazz & the Plastic Population-a-a-a The Only Way Is Up

I did like this one at the time but it's one of those 80s songs I've now
heard far too much over the years to ever want to hear again.

    2.-a-a (2) Kylie Minogue-a-a-a The Loco-Motion

If I recall, Kylie spent more weeks at number 2 in 1988 than any other
act ever did in a calndar year in chart history. Or something like that.
Awful cover of a song I was never that keen on to begin with.

    3.-a-a (4) Kim Wilde-a-a-a You Came

Great song by the lovely Kim. She was back in the big time after being
the opening act for Michael Jackson's series of concerts two months earlier.

    4.-a-a (7) B.V.S.M.P.-a-a-a I Need You

    Awful and annoying.

    5.-a-a (6) S-Express-a-a-a Superfly Guy

Not bad but nowhere near as good as their number 1.

6.-a (NE) Iron Maiden-a-a-a The Evil That Men Do

Typical Iron Maiden song. I quite liked it though.

7.-a-a (3) Glenn Medeiros-a-a-a Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You

    Soppy and awful.

    8.-a (14) Fairground Attraction-a-a-a Find My Love

    Far too twee sounding.

    9.-a-a (5) Salt-N-Pepa-a-a-a Push It/Tramp

I'm not sure if I ever heard 'Tramp' but 'Push It' was unavoidable.
    Great track though.

    10.-a (9) Transvision Vamp-a-a-a I Want Your Love

Pop punk. Decent for what it is.

    11. (12) The Four Tops-a-a-a Reach Out (I'll Be There) {1988 remix}

    Awful remix.

12.-a (8) Everything But The Girl-a-a-a I Don't Want To Talk About It

Pleasant enough but by this point it looked like their creativity was
    waning.

    13. (17) The Funky Worm-a-a-a Hustle! To The Music

Mark Brydon, later of Moloko, was behind this great dance track.

    14. (11) MAC Band ft the McCampbell Brothers-a-a-a Roses Are Red

Sounds about two or three years out of date. And not very good either.

    15. (22) All About Eve-a-a-a Martha's Harbour

A beautiful song that is sadly best remembered for "what happened next"
    - i.e. their TOTP appearance.

    17. (37) Breathe-a-a-a Hands To Heaven

The first time I heard this I tought it was by Alison Moyet. OK single
the first few times I heard it.

    18. (16) Siouxsie And The Banshees-a-a-a Peek-A-Boo

One of their better singles from this phase of their career.

    19. (13) Debbie Gibson-a-a-a Foolish Beat

I actually bought this! It owes a lot to 'Careless Whisper' by George
    Michael.

    20. (19) Pat Benatar-a-a-a All Fired Up

I love this one, definitely my favourite single in this chart. Full of
    energy.

    25. (24) Matt Bianco-a-a-a Don't Blame It On That Girl/Wap-Bam-Boogie

Everyone was buying this for the AA side.

    35. (41) Robbie Robertson-a-a-a Somewhere Down The Crazy River

    A great, slightly odd, track.

    44. (71) Jane Wiedlin-a-a-a Rush Hour

A good power pop single by Jane, ex of the Go-Go's.

    67. (75) Belinda Carlisle-a-a-a Mad About You

A decent single by another ex Go-Go.

    75. (NE) The Commodores-a-a-a Easy {1988 reissue}

As heard in the Halifax CardCash advert.

    Chart dated: 13th August 1988

1 (1) Yazz & the Plastic Population The Only Way Is Up

A very good cover of the northern soul song. You can play quite a lot of 6 degrees of separation with this - original was Gloria Jones who was Marc Bolan's partner, her partner was Jazz Summers who managed a shedload of
bands. So Bolan - Gloria Jones - Yazz - Jazz - Scissor Sisters - Marlon Brando for example. (Sci Sis covered Luck be a Lady)

    2. (2) Kylie Minogue The Loco-Motion

    Not a bad cover

    3. (4) Kim Wilde You Came

Her biggest hit for some time

    7. (3) Glenn Medeiros Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You

    School disco classic.

    8. (14) Fairground Attraction Find My Love

    Their other hit

    11. (12) The Four Tops Reach Out (I'll Be There) {1988 remix}

A few months before their brush with death; they were booked on the
Lockerbie flight but got a late booking for a tv show and changed plans.

    12. (8) Everything But The Girl I Don't Want To Talk About It

Superb sophisiti-pop cover of one from the slow side of Atlantic Crossing. Their biggest hit for years, not sure if Missing ended up bigger? And she's
a damn good writer of books too.

    13. (17) The Funky Worm Hustle! To The Music

Always turning up on the Hits compilations, one of them was behind Moloko among others

    15. (22) All About Eve Martha's Harbour

Pebble Mill at one wasn't it? Did feel sorry for them. Does anyone
    remember anything else about them!!!

    17. (37) Breathe Hands To Heaven

Very big in America I think but moderate success here, very little other
    than this track

    24. (34) Brother Beyond The Harder I Try

This ole heart of mine drum part, really decent lightweight pop track. Apparently they were a band who lost their singer or something like that,
and the company that was sniffing round them had pretty boy Nathan on the books and welded them together

    25. (24) Matt Bianco Don't Blame It On That Girl/Wap-Bam-Boogie

A side used as the Peugeot advert in the 90s

    30. (18) Tracy Chapman Fast Car

A really sad song about a cycle of poverty and destitution. But surprising how few people realise this.

    31. (23) Bros I Owe You Nothing {1988}

Was really into these at age 10-11. Bought the greatest hits cd a few years ago and could still remember loads of the lyrics

    37. (26) UB40 ft Chrissie Hynde Breakfast In Bed

Slightly iffy version of a Dusty in Memphis track

    43. (46) Deacon Blue Chocolate Girl

Very sad lyrics about a bad relationship if you listen closely

    44. (71) Jane Wiedlin Rush Hour

One hit wonder I think, listening to this it's hard to understand why

    47. (49) Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine Anything For You

One from their 'soppy ballad' catalogue as opposed to the 'pumping Latin' catalogue

Though he never managed Shed Seven.

So Bolan - Gloria Jones - Yazz - Jazz - Scissor
Sisters --a Marlon Brando for example.-a (Sci Sis covered Luck be a Lady)

That doesn't sound like it would quite suit them.

    2.-a-a (2) Kylie Minogue The Loco-Motion

    Not a bad cover

    Better than her first attempt.

3.-a-a (4) Kim Wilde You Came

Her biggest hit for some time

    A deserved comeback.

7.-a-a (3) Glenn Medeiros Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You

    School disco classic.

If you had girls in your school?

8.-a (14) Fairground Attraction Find My Love

    Their other hit

One of those odd acts who had two big hits and then their other singles flopped (though in fairness they didn't release many in total).

    11. (12) The Four Tops Reach Out (I'll Be There) {1988 remix}

A few months before their brush with death; they were booked on the Lockerbie flight but got a late booking for a tv show and changed plans.

I'd forgotten this was before 'Loco In Acapulco' (rather than an attempt
    to cash in on it).

12.-a (8) Everything But The Girl I Don't Want To Talk About It

Superb sophisiti-pop cover of one from the slow side of Atlantic
Crossing. Their biggest hit for years, not sure if Missing ended up
    bigger?

Both peaked at 3 but 'Missing' was much longer on the chart. And I'm
sure sales were higher in 1995 than 1988 anyway.

-a And she's a damn good writer of books too.

I've only read the first one but I did like it.

    13. (17) The Funky Worm Hustle! To The Music

Always turning up on the Hits compilations, one of them was behind
    Moloko among others

I was going to say I had this on "Hits 9" but actually that's their
other single 'The Spell!' They liked exclamation marks!

    15. (22) All About Eve Martha's Harbour

Pebble Mill at one wasn't it?

Top of The Pops - Owen Paul had the same thing happen at Pebble Mill
    though.

Did feel sorry for them.-a Does anyone
    remember anything else about them!!!

    Goths do.

    17. (37) Breathe Hands To Heaven

Very big in America I think but moderate success here, very little other than this track

Unusual that their success over there didn't do much for them back home
but to be fair it is quite bland.

    24. (34) Brother Beyond The Harder I Try

This ole heart of mine drum part,

I'm not sure if they ever paid for that sample. Although I don't suppose Motown would have passed it on to the actual drummer anyway.

    really decent lightweight pop track.
Apparently they were a band who lost their singer or something like
that, and the company that was sniffing round them had pretty boy Nathan
on the books and welded them together

That seems possible - I do know that Eg White (later a successful songwriter/producer type) had been a member but wasn't the singer.

    25. (24) Matt Bianco Don't Blame It On That Girl/Wap-Bam-Boogie

A side used as the Peugeot advert in the 90s

    I think I remember that.

    30. (18) Tracy Chapman Fast Car

A really sad song about a cycle of poverty and destitution.-a But
surprising how few people realise this.

Especially if they heard the cover version.

    31. (23) Bros I Owe You Nothing {1988}

Was really into these at age 10-11.-a Bought the greatest hits cd a few years ago and could still remember loads of the lyrics

I'm surprised how few of the Bros songs I do remember now.

    37. (26) UB40 ft Chrissie Hynde Breakfast In Bed

Slightly iffy version of a Dusty in Memphis track

A shameless attempt to repeat 'I Got You Babe'.

    43. (46) Deacon Blue Chocolate Girl

Very sad lyrics about a bad relationship if you listen closely

I think they do overstretch the metaphor a little.

    44. (71) Jane Wiedlin Rush Hour

One hit wonder I think, listening to this it's hard to understand why

Even in the US, where the Go-Gos were better known, she didn't have much
    other success.

    47. (49) Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine Anything For You

One from their 'soppy ballad' catalogue as opposed to the 'pumping
    Latin' catalogue

*tries to block unpleasant mental image of Boris Johnson*

    Chart dated: 13th August 1988

1-a-a-a (1) Yazz & the Plastic Population-a-a-a The Only Way Is Up

I did like this one at the time but it's one of those 80s songs I've now heard far too much over the years to ever want to hear again.

I largely agree. Not the only one in this chart.

Strange to think of this as the starting point of where she is now.

    3.-a-a (4) Kim Wilde-a-a-a You Came

Great song by the lovely Kim. She was back in the big time after being
the opening act for Michael Jackson's series of concerts two months
    earlier.

I actually listened to the whole album last week, and it was pretty good.

    4.-a-a (7) B.V.S.M.P.-a-a-a I Need You

    Awful and annoying.

I'm sure we can all think of what BVSMP might stand for.

    5.-a-a (6) S-Express-a-a-a Superfly Guy

Not bad but nowhere near as good as their number 1.

    But less overfamiliar.

6.-a (NE) Iron Maiden-a-a-a The Evil That Men Do

Typical Iron Maiden song. I quite liked it though.

In an unfortunate coincidence, Martin Birch (producer of this and many
    other Maiden tracks) died yesterday.

7.-a-a (3) Glenn Medeiros-a-a-a Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You

    Soppy and awful.

Apparently he's a head teacher or something.

    8.-a (14) Fairground Attraction-a-a-a Find My Love

    Far too twee sounding.

I do prefer this to 'Perfect' now.

    9.-a-a (5) Salt-N-Pepa-a-a-a Push It/Tramp

I'm not sure if I ever heard 'Tramp' but 'Push It' was unavoidable.

I think 'Tramp' was only listed because there was an earlier release
    with a different flipside.

    Great track though.

    Yep, fun track.

    10.-a (9) Transvision Vamp-a-a-a I Want Your Love

Pop punk. Decent for what it is.

I don't think they aged that well.

    11. (12) The Four Tops-a-a-a Reach Out (I'll Be There) {1988 remix}

    Awful remix.

There was a lot of that sort of thing about.

12.-a (8) Everything But The Girl-a-a-a I Don't Want To Talk About It

Pleasant enough but by this point it looked like their creativity was waning.

Tacking a cover version onto your album after it's released isn't
normally a sign of being full of ideas.

    13. (17) The Funky Worm-a-a-a Hustle! To The Music

Mark Brydon, later of Moloko, was behind this great dance track.

    A bit of a change.

    14. (11) MAC Band ft the McCampbell Brothers-a-a-a Roses Are Red

Sounds about two or three years out of date. And not very good either.

I suppose it's more memorable than the BVSMP one.

    15. (22) All About Eve-a-a-a Martha's Harbour

A beautiful song that is sadly best remembered for "what happened next"
    - i.e. their TOTP appearance.

They even got to break the rules and appear again the next week.

    19. (13) Debbie Gibson-a-a-a Foolish Beat

    I actually bought this!

My Mum said it was the most average record she'd ever heard.

It owes a lot to 'Careless Whisper' by George
    Michael.

    But not the best bits.

    20. (19) Pat Benatar-a-a-a All Fired Up

I love this one, definitely my favourite single in this chart. Full of energy.

Though I always think this is a bit older as well.

    25. (24) Matt Bianco-a-a-a Don't Blame It On That Girl/Wap-Bam-Boogie

Everyone was buying this for the AA side.

Which of course was later released on its own.

    35. (41) Robbie Robertson-a-a-a Somewhere Down The Crazy River

    A great, slightly odd, track.

Legend has it he didn't know the narration was being recorded.

    44. (71) Jane Wiedlin-a-a-a Rush Hour

A good power pop single by Jane, ex of the Go-Go's.

I always associate it with Chris Tarrant.

    67. (75) Belinda Carlisle-a-a-a Mad About You

A decent single by another ex Go-Go.

Already an old track of course.

    75. (NE) The Commodores-a-a-a Easy {1988 reissue}

As heard in the Halifax CardCash advert.

Where he pays for his newspaper with a -u10 note, which seemed ridiculous
    at the time.

These are all covers (though in some cases the version in this chart is
    the best-known one):
1-a-a-a (1) Yazz & the Plastic Population-a-a-a The Only Way Is Up

Didn't know this was a cover!

    Neither did I in 1988.

    Here's the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zf0rMfTeaI
I think it was at most a club hit.

I definitely don't recall that one. It's not bad. I notice it's from
1980 though it sounds like something from the mid 1970s.

Good point - I don't know whether it was recorded any earlier.
