That was probably a fast speed at the time! I accessed the internet via
the local library at the time and I'm sure it was only something like 256kbps back then. Pages took ages to load up.

It was, we were on dial up at home.

You could get free dial up with the firm if you took cable tv from them, or 512kbps was about -u10pm extra I think.

There were mentions in team briefings that cable modem was in beta test, offering 10mbps!!! Usually spoken of in awe... but I was gone before they went live with it.

Apart from the Kylie one, I only heard the others much later.

I suppose not being a Londoner, you wouldn't have seen that Capital
Radio advert that had the Sonique song in it.

Anyway, you know what I'm going to do now.

    First the covers:
    12. (NE) Marc Et Claude I Need Your Lovin' (Like The Sunshine)
    22. (16) Black Legend You See The Trouble With Me
    33. (24) Sid Owen Good Thing Going
    37. (30) York On The Beach
    51. (49) Stephen Gately /Bright Eyes

    97. (RE) Fat Les 2000 Jerusalem

And the samples (including some that are obviously rerecorded):
    20. (10) Atomic Kitten I Want Your Love [samples the theme from the
    film "The Big Country"]*
    24. (15) Jessica Simpson I Think I'm In Love With You [Samples John Cougar's 'Jack & Diane']
    32. (NE) Bleachin' Peakin' [samples Fleetwood Mac's 'Big Love']
    54. (39) Richard Blackwood Mama Who Da Man [samples Junior's 'Mama Used To Say']
    57. (NE) Busta Rhymes Get Out [samples 'The Ugly Duckling']
    66. (51) Fragma Toca's Miracle [a mash-up but more famous than either constituent part]
    82. (66) Oxide & Neutrino Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty) [samples the theme from Casualty, of course]
    84. (RE) Armand Van Helden Koochy [samples Gary Numan's 'Cars']
    92. (87) Will Smith Freakin' It [samples Diana Ross' 'Love Hangover']

*According to Wikipedia, some early copies also have a KLF sample that
    was removed on subsequent pressings

I can only think of one song that's been a hit cover since, and even
    that's stretching a point:
    39. (29) Frankie Goes To Hollywood The Power Of Love {2000 remix}

Was that the sequel to Auf Wiedersehen Pet?

    5.-a-a (NE) Aaliyah Try Again

Was this posthumous, can't remember hen she died?

August 2001, so this wasn't. She was the first woman to have posthumous
Number One single in the UK.

10.-a-a (8) Samantha Mumba Gotta Tell You

Nice track, preferred Body II Body with the huge Bowie sample

I don't think any of her records was particularly bad but they were very generic, and I suppose she never became *quite* a big enough star to get
    away with it.

    15.-a (14) David Gray Babylon

    Overplayed at the time

It was but it's probably not heard enough now.

17.-a (17) Sonique It Feels So Good

Frequent rotation on 'The Box' which was our background in the call centre

I presume you had the sound off?

    49.-a (44) Billie Piper Day & Night

See 17... can't remember if it was excessive voting for this, or no66,
that made them block 'The Box' number for outgoing...

I've had a bit of a reminisce about The Box lately and the songs I
always associate with it (though more of them are from the 90s).

    59.-a (45) Daphne & Celeste U.G.L.Y.

    Ugh.-a Grim song.

Though they do say "you should wear a mask" so at least it's topical 20
    years later.

    66.-a (51) Fragma Toca's Miracle

See 17 and 49...-a Fabulous song even ignoring the video!

    Apparently filmed near here.

On the 25 July the next chart after this one is scheduled to be
broadcast on Pick Of The Pops. The 25th will also be 20 years to the day since Concorde crashed just after take-off from Charles de Gaulle
Airport. Unbelievable to think it's 20 years ago.

And yet somehow, Concorde feels like ancient history.

1.-a-a (NE) Ronan Keating-a-a-a Life Is A Rollercoaster

Very poppy but I actually didn't mind this one.

It sounded at the time (and still does, really) like a very clever
attempt to make a single that could launch him to audiences who didn't
know him from Boyzone or didn't like them and I have to say it broadly
works. Although it didn't make him a star in America which must have
    been part of the plan.

    This was his second of
three solo number ones and the second of 14 top 10 hits (out of 15 chart hits in total, which is a very good success rate).

And he'd presumably have the Number One album right now if it wasn't for Taylor Swift. It seems that Universal in the UK/Ireland wouldn't have
known about her album until it was too late to move his.

    2.-a-a-a (1) The Corrs-a-a-a Breathless

The Corrs were at the peak of their popularity but this one divided
    fans.

It's one of those Number One singles where it seems more like it was
their turn than it being their most popular track.

I'm not a fan though I like some of their tracks and I thought
this one was something of a mess. They would have only one further top
    10 hit after this.

I know they still have an audience but this oddly seems like the
    beginning of the end.

    3.-a-a-a (2) Eminem-a-a-a The Real Slim Shady

A silly song but good fun at the same time. I bought his album later in
the year, after 'Stan' had been released as a single.

I used to have the album but I don't think I ever listened to the whole
thing. I did like this single though.

    4.-a-a-a (3) Limp Bizkit-a-a-a Take A Look Around (Theme From MI:2)

Does what it has to do. And back when rock music could make the upper reaches of the charts with ease.

Especially with a big film marketing budget.

    5.-a-a (NE) Aaliyah-a-a-a Try Again

    Excellent song by Aaliyah.

Yes, I wasn't into RnB at all back then and it's still not my favourite
but I always liked this one.

    6.-a-a-a (5) Steps-a-a-a When I Said Goodbye/Summer Of Love

Stnadrad Steps fayre. Has any other act had as many double A sided chart hits? I count 7 in total, and all top 5 hits too.

Well spotted - no I can't think of anyone else. I checked UB40 because
their first four hits were double-sided but after that I think they only
    had one more.

7.-a-a-a (6) Artful Dodger ft Robbie Craig and Craig David-a-a-a Woman Trouble

I still am none the wiser who Robbie Craig was.

I was going to say that he was an RnB singer who seemed to have been
around for a while, Artful Dodger obviously thought they could make him
    a star etc.
Then I found out he's currently a member of East 17.

    < Bland R&B song.

I sort of like the shamelessness of getting Craig David to say
    "re-re-mix" though.

    8.-a-a-a (7) Alice Deejay-a-a-a Will I Ever

I much prefer 'Better Off Alone' from 12 months previously. The third of
    3 top 10 hits.

    This isn't bad, I suppose.

    9.-a-a-a (9) Darude-a-a-a Sandstorm

I do like this one. One of the big dance hits of summer 2000.

This isn't bad either but I never entirely got what the fuss was about.

    10.-a-a (8) Samantha Mumba-a-a-a Gotta Tell You

I also liked this one. Very good pop / dance track.

    Good but featureless.

    11.-a-a (4) Oasis-a-a-a Sunday Morning Call

    One of their forgotten hits,

So forgotten it's only a hidden track on their singles album.

from an album that wasn't that good.

Conspicuous lack of a 20th anniversary reissue for that one, unlike the previous three. In fact I kind of forgot it even was the 20th
anniversary because nobody really seemed to acknowledge it.

12.-a (NE) Marc Et Claude-a-a-a I Need Your Lovin' (Like The Sunshine)

I remember commenting on this record in one of these threads in what
must be more than a decade ago now. Or maybe not as long ago as that.

I definitely have done Summer 2000 quite a few times.

Based on part of 'Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime' by The Korgis. The video looks quite cheaply made.

    Haven't seen it for ages.

    13.-a (NE) NSync-a-a-a I'll Never Stop

Nope, don't recall hearing this one before.

I obviously have heard it now and I still don't remember it.

    14.-a (12) Kylie Minogue-a-a-a Spinning Around

Her big comeback hit that was to set her on course once again for
several years of massive chart success. A bit lightweight to an extent
but quite good in its own way.

    Well-suited to the comeback single.

    15.-a (14) David Gray-a-a-a Babylon

It was hard to escape this record during the next 18 months. One of
those records radio programmers must pray for.

Ironically I don't think the UK radio version is available anywhere now.

    16.-a (13) Vengaboys-a-a-a Uncle John From Jamaica

The success of the Vengaboys still leads to the question: why were they
so popular? This is awful. They were like a poor man's Boney M of the millennium.

I know some of their songs were just stupid, which seems fair enough,
but this borders on the offensive.

    17.-a (17) Sonique-a-a-a It Feels So Good

A class record that made number 1 in this, it's second time around.

Not one I ever cared for TBH.

    18.-a (11) Coldplay-a-a-a Yellow

Their big breathrough hit. A decent enough song.

I bet Parlophone couldn't believe their luck (it was written during the
album sessions so they'd signed them up without even hearing this song).

19.-a (NE) Christina Aguilera-a-a-a I Turn To You

    Vaguely recall.

Very "third single has to be a ballad, what have we got?".

    20.-a (10) Atomic Kitten-a-a-a I Want Your Love

    Ditto.

At least it's a bit more dramatic.

29.-a (NE) De La Soul ft Redman-a-a-a Oooh

Didn't Redman team up with the above mentioned Christina Aguilera a
couple of years later for 'Dirrty'. I assume it's the same rapper.

Same guy. His real name is Reginald Noble, apparently.

    30.-a (26) Lonestar-a-a-a Amazed

This had an astonishly long chart run by the standards of the time especially in the top 40 where it spent 4 months meandering between positions 21-40.

    And then Westlife covered it.

    47.-a (48) Whitney Houston/George Michael-a-a-a If I Told You That

A largely forgotten single by two superstars who are no longer with us.

Seems like it was made to be a radio hit at a specific time

68.-a (NE) Russell Watson & Shaun Ryder-a-a-a Barcelona

The mind boggles. I think it was just meant as a bit of fun. Or at least
    I hope it was.

You really have to. It doesn't seem to have coincided with any obvious
    event or anniversary.
I suppose if you're covering a song made famous by a very impressive
singer, doing it as a duet with Shaun Ryder is one way to distract from
any of your own vocal shortcomings.
