• Don't let it turn sour, try to rely on this old chart from 1990

    From Chris Brown@extreme_rice@yahoo.com to uk.music.charts on Sun Jul 26 14:29:45 2020
    From Newsgroup: uk.music.charts

Back to normal schedules here, although as it turns out I've still made
a mistake - I originally picked this week out after the death of Bonnie Pointer but it turns out she wasn't actually in the Pointer Sisters in
1990. Still, it's a neat 30 years ago and we do get a groundbreaking (if
not particularly good) Number One single. Plus quite a lot of cover
versions for a chart outside the Christmas period, and a singer who
dropped her surname for the UK market.

Playlists are here, including the famously cheap Pixies video. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6nnUlaqZyLgql8oHBUYVsf?si=1obQyr9nRHSxk2lB66WC_Q

    1. (4) Partners in Kryme Turtle Power

Ugh. Just ugh. And the song that replaced it was worse see no50!

    10. (13) Soup Dragons ft Junior Reid I'm Free

Remember singing this at the end of last day of school

    13. (NE) DNA featuring Suzanne Vega Tom's Diner

First date with a previous partner was to see her at the Norwich LCR.

    16. (18) River City People Carry The Blame/California Dreaming

Loved this at the time, although think I was in the minority.

    17. (3) Luciano Pavarotti Nessun Dorma

Still can't forget my Scout troop's float that year. We were all in
something approximating kit - I was Sweden, yellow shirt and blue shorts.
One leader was in a proper ref's kit he'd borrowed from a mate. The other - my father - was in his funeral suit, white shirt and dicky bow, with hanky, miming to this on a tape player!

    31. (52) Sinead O'Connor The Emperor's New Clothes

    Chart dated 28th July 1990

1.-a-a (4) Partners in Kryme Turtle Power

Ugh.-a Just ugh.-a And the song that replaced it was worse see no50!

At least it saves you the trouble of watching the film though.

    10. (13) Soup Dragons ft Junior Reid I'm Free

Remember singing this at the end of last day of school

Don't be afraid of your freedom!
I read an interview with Sean Dickson recently, he seems a bit bitter
    but also rather troubled.

    13. (NE) DNA featuring Suzanne Vega Tom's Diner

First date with a previous partner was to see her at the Norwich LCR.

I've never seen her live, but I probably should.

14.-a (8) The Stone Roses One Love

The 'comeback' after a few months away.-a If only we knew how long the
    gap would be...

...Then when you heard the next album you'd wish it was even longer?
This pretty much passed me by at the time, I think I heard 'Fools Gold'
and 'Love Spreads' when they were originally released but otherwise they
were mainly a band I was aware of in retrospect.

    16. (18) River City People Carry The Blame/California Dreaming

Loved this at the time, although think I was in the minority.

It's not a terrible version (of the AA-side) but with hindsight it's not
great either. I notice now that - unlike the original - she actually
    does pray instead of pretending.

17.-a (3) Luciano Pavarotti Nessun Dorma

Still can't forget my Scout troop's float that year.-a We were all in something approximating kit - I was Sweden, yellow shirt and blue
shorts. One leader was in a proper ref's kit he'd borrowed from a mate.
The other - my father - was in his funeral suit, white shirt and dicky
bow, with hanky, miming to this on a tape player!

Did he have all the padding?
I actually saw one of Pavarotti's suits in an exhibition last year.

    31. (52) Sinead O'Connor The Emperor's New Clothes

Smash Hits review of this started 'this may be the most honest pop song
ever' - the opening line is something like 'seems years since you held the baby while I wrecked the bedroom'

Very unusual subject matter for pop, if uncomfortable to listen to.
Certaibly a brave choice of follow-up.

    36. (26) Adamski Killer

    Superb vocal.

Yes, and possibly the best use of it too.

    41. (27) Inspiral Carpets She Comes In The Fall

Madchester making a couple of entries in this chart

Although they might remind you they were from Oldham.

    50. (NE) Bombalurina Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

Going to be massive all through August.-a Sadly.

I suppose it's not quite as bad as I remembered but that's a low bar.

    71. (44) The Charlatans The Only One I Know

First hit from a band who would be around quite a few years

Still around now, although I don't think they were due to be active this
year because Tim Burgess was putting out a solo album.
They have released a demo version of this to mark the 30th anniversary
    though.

    88. (80) Happy Mondays Step On

Another huge one from earlier in the year hanging on.

I can see why this would have a long shelf life.

    94. (RE) Black Box Everybody Everybody

Mmm.-a Ok, but they never hit the heights of Ride on Time again.

Although this seems fresher because you never hear it now.

    96. (90) Snap! The Power

Huge hit in early spring, before he became the world's slowest rapper on 'Mary had a little boy'

AIUI this version only exists because the original sampled vocal wasn't cleared.

    1s. Like this one.

    2.-a-a (1) Elton John-a-a-a Sacrifice/Healing Hands

Quite a feat to reach number 1 with two tracks that had both flopped
when released individually. 'Sacrifice' is dull. 'Healing Hands' has a
    bit more life to it.

    3.-a-a (2) Craig McLachlan-a-a-a Mona

Decentish, in a catchy sort of way.

    4.-a (14) Madonna-a-a-a Hanky Panky

One of the worst singles Madonna has released.

    5.-a-a (7) MC Hammer-a-a-a U Can't Touch This

MC Hammer was massive in the US at the time but ultimately ended up
bankrupt if I recall. The parent album sold millions and was recorded
for just a few thousand dollars so I assume all the money went to
copyright holders and the label. I did enjoy this song though. A bit of nonsense in the video but it was all quite good fun.

    6.-a-a (5) FAB-a-a-a Thuderbirds Are Go!

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

7.-a-a (6) Roxette-a-a-a It Must Have Been Love

This would be a hit again in 1993 if I recall. Quite good. Sadly lead
singer Marie Fredriksson died last December after having health problems
for many years which began with being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002.

8.-a (17) Blue Pearl-a-a-a Naked In The Rain

Possibly my favourite song in this chart. It's a brilliant song. I think
I may still have the 12" single.

9.-a (15) Technotronic featuring Ya Kid K-a-a-a Rockin' Over The Beat

They were sounding a bit samey by this point.

    10. (13) Soup Dragons ft Junior Reid-a-a-a I'm Free

I liked this enough at the time to buy the 7".

    11.-a (9) Snap!-a-a-a Ooops Up

Not as good as 'The Power'.

    12. (12) Glenn Medeiros featuring Bobby Brown-a-a-a She Ain't Worth It

    Very bland.

    13. (NE) DNA featuring Suzanne Vega-a-a-a Tom's Diner

I definitely still have the 12" of this. A great remix of Suzanne's song
from 1987. It was in 1990 that the MP3 codec was being developed and it
was Suzanne's original version of 'Tom's Diner' that was the track being
used to perfect the correct compression required to help reproduce as
    faithful a sound as possible.

    14.-a (8) The Stone Roses-a-a-a One Love

This was a disappointment and it sounds so lifeless.

    15. (11) Maxi Priest-a-a-a Close To You

A US number 1. Decent song.

    16. (18) River City People-a-a-a Carry The Blame/California Dreaming

I had the 12" to this. RCP really wanted 'Carry The Blame' to be the A
side but the label had fears that a song about abortion wasn't going to
be a radio friendly song so insisted the single feature something a biut
    more radio friendly.

    17.-a (3) Luciano Pavarotti-a-a-a Nessun Dorma

I did like it when this charted. For that we have Des Lynam to thank I
do believe as the story is he suggested this be used as the theme to the
BBC's World Cup programmes. A very stirring performance.

    18. (10) Englandneworder-a-a-a World In Motion...

And this was at number 1 when the above was at number 2. The charts
really did match the mood of the nation during Italia 90.

    19. (31) Dream Warriors-a-a-a Wash Your Face In My Sink

A bit of a strange song.

    20. (16) Wilson Phillips-a-a-a Hold On

I quite liked this one. Or to be more exact I quite liked watching the
video simply to see Chynna Phillips.
    23. (37) LFO-a-a-a LFO
    32. (NE) Tricky Disco-a-a-a Tricky Disco

Both records were released on Warp Records. I still love both tracks.

    50. (NE) Bombalurina-a-a-a Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

Possibly THE worst number 1 of 1990.
    64. (NE) Flowered Up-a-a-a It's On

I remember Gary Davies being a big fan of this band and playing anything
and everything they released on his Sunday night show on Radio 1. I
    thought they were awful.

    90. (78) The Orb-a-a-a A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld

The title of the track is almost as good as the track itself.

    95. (NE) Rosie Ania-a-a-a Eyes Of A Woman

I bought this for 50p at a chart return shop. I quite liked it as I
quite liked her voice but it's a long forgotten minor chart and radio hit.

    Chart dated 28th July 1990

    1.-a-a (4) Partners in Kryme-a-a-a Turtle Power

1990 had a number of great records but it also had some very poor number
    1s. Like this one.

You don't really get singles from films that tell you the story of the
    film any more, do you?

    2.-a-a (1) Elton John-a-a-a Sacrifice/Healing Hands

Quite a feat to reach number 1 with two tracks that had both flopped
when released individually. 'Sacrifice' is dull. 'Healing Hands' has a
    bit more life to it.

But Sacrifice seemed to be the more popular side at the time, and
certainly is the more played now.

    3.-a-a (2) Craig McLachlan-a-a-a Mona

Decentish, in a catchy sort of way.

I remember Pat Sharp on Capital pointing out (via a listener suggestion)
that it sounded a bit like the Rolling Stones version of 'It's All Over
Now'. Which isn't entirely untrue, but overlooks the fact that the
Stones did actually do their own version of 'Mona'.

    4.-a (14) Madonna-a-a-a Hanky Panky

One of the worst singles Madonna has released.

It's not even so bad it's good is it? Just really bad.

    5.-a-a (7) MC Hammer-a-a-a U Can't Touch This

MC Hammer was massive in the US at the time but ultimately ended up
    bankrupt if I recall.

And then turned into a preacher?

The parent album sold millions and was recorded
for just a few thousand dollars so I assume all the money went to
copyright holders and the label. I did enjoy this song though. A bit of nonsense in the video but it was all quite good fun.

    Yep, a good silly song.

    6.-a-a (5) FAB-a-a-a Thuderbirds Are Go!

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

The production sounds quite cheap now.

7.-a-a (6) Roxette-a-a-a It Must Have Been Love

This would be a hit again in 1993 if I recall.

Yep. There's an earlier "Christmas" version from before this as well.

9.-a (15) Technotronic featuring Ya Kid K-a-a-a Rockin' Over The Beat

They were sounding a bit samey by this point.

Yeah, I think they only had the one idea really.

    10. (13) Soup Dragons ft Junior Reid-a-a-a I'm Free

I liked this enough at the time to buy the 7".

It does sound extremely of its time now.

    11.-a (9) Snap!-a-a-a Ooops Up

Not as good as 'The Power'.

I suppose at least it's not a carbon copy.

    12. (12) Glenn Medeiros featuring Bobby Brown-a-a-a She Ain't Worth It

    Very bland.

An odd combination, but not an interesting one.

    13. (NE) DNA featuring Suzanne Vega-a-a-a Tom's Diner

I definitely still have the 12" of this. A great remix of Suzanne's song from 1987. It was in 1990 that the MP3 codec was being developed and it
was Suzanne's original version of 'Tom's Diner' that was the track being used to perfect the correct compression required to help reproduce as faithful a sound as possible.

Apparently somebody did make a track based on all the bits that where compressed out of the original.

    14.-a (8) The Stone Roses-a-a-a One Love

This was a disappointment and it sounds so lifeless.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the Stone Roses had largely passed me by in
their classic era, but they were still much talked about during Britpop
so I bought a Shine compilation with this track on it and couldn't
understand what all the fuss was about.

    15. (11) Maxi Priest-a-a-a Close To You

    A US number 1.

A big deal for a UK reggae act.

    Decent song.

Yep, I always quite liked it.

    16. (18) River City People-a-a-a Carry The Blame/California Dreaming

I had the 12" to this. RCP really wanted 'Carry The Blame' to be the A
side but the label had fears that a song about abortion wasn't going to
be a radio friendly song so insisted the single feature something a biut more radio friendly.

I assume this is why most double A-sides happen.
I'm sure I only heard one side at the time.

    17.-a (3) Luciano Pavarotti-a-a-a Nessun Dorma

I did like it when this charted. For that we have Des Lynam to thank I
do believe as the story is he suggested this be used as the theme to the BBC's World Cup programmes. A very stirring performance.

Then he released his own single from the 1998 World Cup.

    18. (10) Englandneworder-a-a-a World In Motion...

And this was at number 1 when the above was at number 2. The charts
really did match the mood of the nation during Italia 90.

I'm not sure how they went down in the other nations.

    19. (31) Dream Warriors-a-a-a Wash Your Face In My Sink

A bit of a strange song.

This sort of thing was very popular for a while around the turn of the
90s and then became more peripheral.

    20. (16) Wilson Phillips-a-a-a Hold On

I quite liked this one. Or to be more exact I quite liked watching the
video simply to see Chynna Phillips.

    Ahem.

    23. (37) LFO-a-a-a LFO
    32. (NE) Tricky Disco-a-a-a Tricky Disco

Both records were released on Warp Records.

Obviously a bit of a song title shortage in Sheffield.

    I still love both tracks.

Oddly I remember LFO from the time but not Tricky Disco.

    50. (NE) Bombalurina-a-a-a Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

Possibly THE worst number 1 of 1990.

Even as a novelty it doesn't quite work.

    64. (NE) Flowered Up-a-a-a It's On

I remember Gary Davies being a big fan of this band and playing anything
and everything they released on his Sunday night show on Radio 1. I
    thought they were awful.

    Not what I'd call charismatic.

    90. (78) The Orb-a-a-a A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules
From The Centre Of The Ultraworld

The title of the track is almost as good as the track itself.

    It may actually be better.

    95. (NE) Rosie Ania-a-a-a Eyes Of A Woman

I bought this for 50p at a chart return shop. I quite liked it as I
quite liked her voice but it's a long forgotten minor chart and radio hit.

    Seemingly her only solo single.
