1.-a-a (1) Queen-a-a-a Bohemian Rhapsody

It's 7th week at number 1. If I recall, by now Top Of The Pops were just playing the second half of the video.

2.-a-a (4) Sailor-a-a-a Glass Of Champagne

A record that was still being played quite a lot as an oldie in
1979/1980 by my local ILR station (Metro). I quite like it now but think
I found it annoying back then, probably from being played too much.

3.-a (12) ABBA-a-a-a Mamma Mia

Heading to the top spot and kickstarting their 2 year period of
dominance where they had 6 number 1 singles out of 7 releases. Another I didn't like back then but don't mind now.

4.-a (21) Mike Oldfield-a-a-a In Dulce Jubilo/On Horseback

Although seen as a Christmas hit it didn't burst into life until after
the new year. I remember Tom Browne of the Sunday Radio 1 top 20 chart
show playing 'On Horseback' at one point. I guess by February the main
side was quite unseasonal.

5.-a-a (7) 10cc-a-a-a Art For Art's Sake

Some of 10cc's singles were just far too clever for their own good and
this is one of them.

6.-a-a (5) Chubby Checker-a-a-a Let's Twist Again/The Twist

The 60s revival was under way. Soon there would be a 1930s and 1940s
revival too and even the 1950s got a look in.

7.-a-a (6) Andy Fairweather-Low-a-a-a Wide Eyed And Legless

Another record that Metro Radio loved and I found annoying. After this
the hits dried up.

8.-a (18) Billy Howard-a-a-a King Of The Cops

A not very funny parody song of the famous American TV detectives of the
time.

9.-a (23) Small Faces-a-a-a Itchycoo Park {1975 reissue}

Another hit from the 1960s revived. Good song.

10. (11) Demis Roussos-a-a-a Happy To be On An Island In The Sun

Awful record by Mr Warbly Voice.

11.-a (2) Laurel And Hardy With The Avalon Boys featuring Chill Wills
The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine

I don't think either Laurel or Hardy sang on this record. Stan Laurel
lived in my town for a while, as well as other places in the north east.

12.-a (8) David Bowie-a-a-a Golden Years

Great song. I love this era of David Bowie. My aunt, who had been a
massive Bowie fan, didn't and she stopped buying his albums.

13. (13) David Essex-a-a-a If I Could

Dreary song and proof that David Essex wasn't a natural singer.

14.-a (9) Dana-a-a-a It's Gonna Be A Cold Cold Christmas

The Christmas hits hung around the charts for much longer back then.
This one is a seemingly forgotten Christmas song which I quite like.

15. (28) Barry White-a-a-a Let The Music Play

Good song by Barry.

16. (45) The Miracles-a-a-a Love Machine

This one takes me back to hearing it on Radio Luxembourg more than any
other song on the chart. Great soul track.

17. (43) R & J Stone-a-a-a We Do It

Naughty lyrics yet the record never got a ban on Radio 1. Produced by
Phil "The Collector" Swern.

18.-a (3) Greg Lake-a-a-a I Believe In Father Christmas

Almost a Christmas number 1 this is one of the best Christmas songs in
my opinion. The lyrics were written by Peter Sinfield who alos wrote
'The Land Of Make Believe' by Bucks Fizz. It seems he liked to write
songs with lyrics that could best be described as taking a cynical view
of life.

19. (10) The Drifters-a-a-a Can I Take You Home Little Girl

Another dull song by the 70s version of The Drifters.

20. (24) The Fatback Band-a-a-a Do The Bus Stop

I always wondered, was the Bus Stop meant to be a dance? If so, it's a
silly name for one.

21. (25) Crispy And Company-a-a-a Get It Together

I quite like this forgotten disco song.

25. (30) Paul Davidson-a-a-a Midnight Rider

This is a great reggae song.

27. (46) Electric Light Orchestra-a-a-a Evil Woman

This kickstarted their most successful period. Good song.

33. (NE) Walker Brothers-a-a-a No Regrets

It was almost 9 years previosuly since their last hit. This is a great song.

37. (NE) Donna Summer-a-a-a Love To Love You Baby

Another naughty song. Apparently Donna ran up and down a flight of
stairs several times before recording her vocals tgo this song. Banned
by Radio 1 but I got to hear it on Radio Luxembourg.

38. (47) Paul Simon-a-a-a 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

A US number 1. Poor song by his standards.

39. (NE) Slik-a-a-a Forever And Ever

Tipped to be the next big thing but they struggled to follow up this
number 1. Good song and the first appearance on the charts of Midge Ure.
He would later launch his solo career with a cover of the record at
number 33.

46. (NE) Osibisa-a-a-a Sunshine Day

Good song. I doubt the band ever made much money as years later I did a
home visit to one of the band (I won't mention who it was) when I was
working as a Visiting Officer for the old DHSS. Quite sad really to see someone who had been on Top Of The Pops down on his luck.

47. (39) Ethna Campbell-a-a-a The Old Rugged Cross

The record that spent 11 weeks in the Breakers Chart and then the same
again in the top 50.

I obviously haven't seen any episodes from this time but I can
completely believe that. I notice how they cut some of the Number Ones
in 1990 even though they're shorter.

In 1990 it seemed like every song on TOTP was getting cut short.

I made a mistake on it being on its 7th week at the top. It was in fact
its 8th week.

Is this the point where pop is old enough for nostalgia to be serious business?

I think it must have been because there were a lot of "best of" type
albums being released, often by half forgotten acts, in 1976 and 1977.

Didn't he write for King Crimson too?

He did. And prior to forming Emmerson, Lake & Palmer, Greg Lake was lead singer of King Crimson.

Is it really only two minutes long?

I've not heard a version which is longer but by disco standards that is
very short.

Seems strange in retrospect that this wasn't even a Top 50 hit.

I think it hung around the Breakers chart for a while though.
