• Some days I pray for soul.. and there is a bit of it in this old chart from 1993

There's also dance, hip-hop, AOR, reggae, rock, country, Britpop and a
novelty hit by a sci-fi character from the future. Yes, you escaped
having a 1990s chart last week so you're getting one now, albeit with a
good few oldies and covers. I promise you the one I would have posted
last week had an even worse Number One single.
The chart also includes a track produced by Andrew Waetherall who died
    earlier this year.

Playlists are here and I've done unexpectedly well finding the obscure

    Chart date: 30th October 1993

    1. (1) Meat Loaf I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)

    Very ambivalent about this one.

    8. (2) Take That ft Lulu Relight My Fire

A decent cover version, the vocal part she adds works really well.

    65. (44) Go West Tracks Of My Tears

I'd forgotten this was released as Go West, for some reason I thought it was Peter solo.

    74. (47) Blur Sunday Sunday

    Their wilderness period.

100.(79) Johnny Cash Ring Of Fire

    Why was this around again?

Going to have this at my parents funeral this week (at their request!).
Also Michael Ball The Rose and Neil Sedaka the Hungry Years. That's why
I've not been around much for a few weeks.

Which is unfortunate for such a long song.

8.-a-a (2) Take That ft Lulu Relight My Fire

Contentiously, I think it may be her best single.

It seems quite a forgotten single all around.

Levis advert apparently. I don't specifically remember it but then I
probably wouldn't have recognised the song at the time. https://www.discogs.com/Johnny-Cash-Ring-Of-Fire/release/1466759

There was no avoiding the Meat Loaf track back then.

Seems like a reasonable excuse to point out the songs that have other prominent versions etc.

    1. (1) Meat Loaf I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)

    8. (2) Take That ft Lulu Relight My Fire [cover of the Dan Hartman song] 9. (27) Goodmen Give It Up [based on a sample of a Sergio Mendes track,
and was famously itself sampled on 'Fairground' by Simply Red]

including David Cassidy and The Muppets]

    35. (21) SWV Right Here [samples 'Human Nature' by Michael Jackson]
    36. (20) Diana Ross Chain Reaction {1993 reissue} [later hit cover by Steps]
    46. (29) The Lemonheads Into Your Arms [cover of a song by Australian
    band Love Positions]

    69. (NE) Edwin Starr And Shadow/Troggs And Wolf War/Wild Thing
    71. (NE) Neil Young Long May You Run (Live) [version of the title track
of a album by Young And Stephen Stills]
    88. (65) 10000 Maniacs Because The Night [cover of the Patti Smith Group
hit, also a hit for Jan Wayne and Cascada]

    90. (RE) Bette Midler From A Distance [also a hit for Cliff Richard]
    92. (77) Jimmy Durante As Time Goes By [cover of the song from Casablanca]
    97. (NE) Hank Marvin ft Mark Knopfler Wonderful Land [cover of the
    Shadows hit]

If I've got my dates right this was the week all us supervisors at work
had a great week's stay courtesy of the taxpayer at a posh hotel in
County Durham. We found out why the hotel was so cheap though - there
was an RAF site neaby and we had low flying fighter jets screaming
overhead at laest three or four times a day. I was convinced one was
going to crash into the hotel. At least it was peaceful on a night time
(the only noise then was of drunken civil servants!).

    1.-a-a (1) Meat Loaf-a-a-a I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)

I didn't mind this the first handful of times I heard it but it
eventually annoyed me. And it's far too long.

    2.-a-a (7) Cappella-a-a-a U Got 2 Let The Music

Back when Eurodance could chart with ease. Good dance track.

3.-a (NE) Bryan Adams-a-a-a Please Forgive Me

    I didn't mind this one.

    4.-a (10) Dina Carroll-a-a-a Don't Be A Stranger

And I thought this one was a lovely song.

5.-a-a (3) DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince-a-a-a Boom! Shake The Room

I suppose it was a bit of fun.

    6.-a-a (4) Eternal-a-a-a Stay

    Decent British R&B song.

7.-a (NE) Phil Collins-a-a-a Both Sides Of The Story

His big comeback single. It didn't hang around the charts for long though.

8.-a-a (2) Take That ft Lulu-a-a-a Relight My Fire

One of their best songs. And as James has posted, Lulu adds to the song (normally her voice annoys me).

    9.-a (27) Goodmen-a-a-a Give It Up

Second outing for this track. It would form the basis of 'Fairground' by Simply Red a couple of years later.

    10.-a (8) The Prodigy-a-a-a One Love

One of their more forgotten songs and with good reason.

    11.-a (5) M People-a-a-a Moving On Up

I did like this then but find Heather Small's voice irritating these days.

    12. (12) Bjork with David Arnold-a-a-a Play Dead

    Great quirky, song.

13.-a (6) Chaka Demus And Pliers-a-a-a She Don't Let Nobody

    It's no 'Tease Me'.

    14.-a (9) Haddaway-a-a-a Life

    It's no 'What Is Love'.

    15. (15) Lisa Stansfield-a-a-a So Natural

She really had become very bland by now.

    16. (NE) Tina Turner-a-a-a Why Must We Wait Until Tonight?

A bit of innuendo there from Miss T.

    17. (18) The Cat-a-a-a Tongue Tied

I had to look this one up. It seems it's a Red Dwarf song. Awful.

    18. (24) Chris Rea-a-a-a Julia

    Poor

    19. (13) Frankie Goes To Hollywood-a-a-a Relax 1993

As if enough people didn't buy it first time around.

    20. (25) Lena Fiagbe-a-a-a Gotta Get It Right

Another forgotten song that I quite liked back then. I know little of
heer but a Google check reveals she's still involved in the music
business and is active on twitter.

    40. (NE) Sheep On Drugs-a-a-a From A To H And Back Again

A strange song that I own on a compilation CD given away as a covermount
    in something like Select magazine.

    41. (NE) Joey Lawrence-a-a-a Stay Forever

I recall him being in kids TV programme Blossom.

    69. (NE) Edwin Starr And Shadow/Troggs And Wolf-a-a-a War/Wild Thing

A strange mix of a veteran soul singer and some of the characters from Galdiators (if I recall).

    79. (NE) Mark Knopfler-a-a-a Going Home (Theme Of The Local Hero)

The track that is played at St James Park when Newcastle United run out
at the start of the match.

    81. (NE) The Wildhearts-a-a-a Greetings From Shitsville

Bizarre title by an act who are fanatical Newcastle supporters.

I'm not a supervisor but they have announced we all get the 24th of

We found out why the hotel was so cheap though - there

    Heh.
Back in the dim and distant past of early March 2020, we stayed in a
hotel that was literally at an airport (but not the same airport we flew
in and out of). Luckily there weren't many flights.

Even the radio edit if over five minutes.

    2.-a-a (7) Cappella-a-a-a U Got 2 Let The Music

Back when Eurodance could chart with ease. Good dance track.

Seems faintly out of place in the upper end of this chart, but not
    necessarily in a bad way.

3.-a (NE) Bryan Adams-a-a-a Please Forgive Me

    I didn't mind this one.

    I didn't either although it's not great.

    4.-a (10) Dina Carroll-a-a-a Don't Be A Stranger

And I thought this one was a lovely song.

    Though a bit sad.

5.-a-a (3) DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince-a-a-a Boom! Shake The Room

I suppose it was a bit of fun.

Yes, sounds a bit dated now but it's a good pop record.

    6.-a-a (4) Eternal-a-a-a Stay

    Decent British R&B song.

Their first hit and one of their better ones.

7.-a (NE) Phil Collins-a-a-a Both Sides Of The Story

His big comeback single. It didn't hang around the charts for long though.

Presumably there is a version that lasts less than six minutes.

    9.-a (27) Goodmen-a-a-a Give It Up

Second outing for this track. It would form the basis of 'Fairground' by Simply Red a couple of years later.

Though of course the drums are already a sample.

    10.-a (8) The Prodigy-a-a-a One Love

One of their more forgotten songs and with good reason.

Yeah, I don't remember it at all from the time and I've forgotten it
    again now.

    11.-a (5) M People-a-a-a Moving On Up

I did like this then but find Heather Small's voice irritating these days.

At least there's a tune in there.

    12. (12) Bjork with David Arnold-a-a-a Play Dead

    Great quirky, song.

Apparently the first major job for David Arnold.

13.-a (6) Chaka Demus And Pliers-a-a-a She Don't Let Nobody

    It's no 'Tease Me'.

It's no 'Twist And Shout' either.

    14.-a (9) Haddaway-a-a-a Life

    It's no 'What Is Love'.

It's not but it's very rare to hear any other Haddaway song so it makes
    a nice change.

    15. (15) Lisa Stansfield-a-a-a So Natural

She really had become very bland by now.

And this is still quite early on too.
I think she has done some good stuff since but not very consistently.

    16. (NE) Tina Turner-a-a-a Why Must We Wait Until Tonight?

A bit of innuendo there from Miss T.

Not even subtle. Actually written by Bryan Adams and "Mutt" Lange but I
guess they thought it would sound a bit too seedy from a male singer.

    17. (18) The Cat-a-a-a Tongue Tied

I had to look this one up. It seems it's a Red Dwarf song. Awful.

I don't get the impression Red Dwarf got a big audience at that time so
I suppose it's quite impressive they managed a Top 20 single.

    18. (24) Chris Rea-a-a-a Julia

    Poor

Probably his least-remembered hit, and probably his least memorable too.

    19. (13) Frankie Goes To Hollywood-a-a-a Relax 1993

As if enough people didn't buy it first time around.

I see the hits compilation this re-release was tied into is being
    reissued on vinyl again.

    20. (25) Lena Fiagbe-a-a-a Gotta Get It Right

Another forgotten song that I quite liked back then. I know little of
heer but a Google check reveals she's still involved in the music
business and is active on twitter.

I think this was on Mother Records, which had some connection to U2.
    Anyway, good song.

    40. (NE) Sheep On Drugs-a-a-a From A To H And Back Again

A strange song that I own on a compilation CD given away as a covermount
    in something like Select magazine.

Strange that their only hit is not on Spotify.

    41. (NE) Joey Lawrence-a-a-a Stay Forever

I recall him being in kids TV programme Blossom.

Yeah, he kept trying at the pop star thing for quite a while (I presume
he was having more success in other countries).

    69. (NE) Edwin Starr And Shadow/Troggs And Wolf-a-a-a War/Wild Thing

A strange mix of a veteran soul singer and some of the characters from Galdiators (if I recall).

Yep, and a combination of The Troggs and another Gladiator on the
    flipside. Very odd in retrospect.

    79. (NE) Mark Knopfler-a-a-a Going Home (Theme Of The Local Hero)

The track that is played at St James Park when Newcastle United run out
at the start of the match.

Was it in an advert at this point? I presume there was a reason for the re-release.

    81. (NE) The Wildhearts-a-a-a Greetings From Shitsville

Bizarre title by an act who are fanatical Newcastle supporters.

In the song itself they place "Shitsville" in NW3 which as you know
includes Hampstead and Belsize Park. House prices do not reflect this
    opinion.

A lovely sort of sad though.

I've just checked and they had a lot more hits than I realised though
after 'Twist And Shout' none of them were big hits.

The track that is played at St James Park when Newcastle United run

It could have been in an advert but I rarely watched TV back then.
Newcastle had just been promoted to the Premier League and were
attracting nationwide attention under Kevin Keegan's free flowing style
of football. I can't recall if 'Going Home' was being played at home
games at this point but if it was it could have been demand from
football fans that led to a re-release.

I've mentioned before I once lived in Belsize Park (and socialised in Hampstead). My recollections of NW3 don't match up with those of The Wildhearts...

Yes, takes a bit of the shine off the Goodmen record TBH.

    Ha! no.

I presume they were put in some cruddy digs when they had to come down
to London for recording or whatever.
