• This old chart from 1974 is just one of those things you put down to experience

I was struggling to choose between 90s and 70s this week, and took so
long to decide that I finally went for this just because it was only a
Top 50 so I could compile the Youtube playlists quicker.
Fans of double chart appearances will instantly spot the person who
appears on their own and in a duet, and probably the separate people
charting solo and in a group. Spot the Brits who topped the chart with a
hit that didn't do much over here.

Some of the ones I would expect in fact, though it's always more
impressive to recognise instrumentals. But still, plenty of other
    versions to point out.

    2. (11) Ken Boothe Everything I Own [cover of the Bread song, later a Number One for Boy George]
    5. (1) John Denver Annie's Song [covered by James Galway]
    7. (15) Rod Stewart Bring It On Home To Me-You Send Me [medley of songs made famous by The Animals and Sam Cooke]

    14. (4) Carl Douglas Kung-Fu Fighting [later covered by Bus Stop with
    Carl Douglas]

Listing the #20 was an error, TTAL is the only Commodores song I know.

    20. (20) The Commodores Machine Gun

Maybe that's how they killed it.

    Chart dated: 19th October 1974

    5.-a-a (1) John Denver-a-a-a Annie's Song

His only solo hit, with an ode to his wife if I recall.

They divorced in 1982. He chainsawed the bed in half.

I suppose it's a different way of marking the end of a marriage.

    11. (31) Bay City Rollers-a-a-a All Of Me Loves All Of You

One of their more forgotten songs. The following year would bring them
    chart domination.

Aren't most of their songs other than the big 2 forgotten now?

'Summerlove Sensation' gets a fair number of plays. I'd say that was
possibly better known these days than 'Give A Little Love'. And it's a
much better song (and is the only BCR record I ever bought).

    48. (NE) The Glitter Band-a-a-a Let's Get Together Again

I think they played on their own recordings.

They did, but seemingly not on Gary's.

Mike Leander played all the instruments on the records. I believe the
Glitter Band just played on live performances.

    BREAKERS

b01 (b10) HOT SHOT - Barry Blue [Panel Sales=243] (Chart Entry
    26-Oct-1974 at No. 39)

Seems like a cheap version of the Glitter Band.

It did sound a bit like them. Blue and the GB were on the same label and
while Barry Blue and Mike Leander didn't have any connection with each
other I guess Blue was somewhat influenced by Leander, certainly his
    success as a producer.

    b03 (b03) I SURVIVED - Adam Faith [Panel Sales=217]

    Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.
I guess he was trying to come back because of the Stardust films with
    David Essex?

It seems likely. Faith was also manager of Leo Sayer so perhaps that
also inspired him to want to make a comeback.

    b06 (NEW) MAGIC - Pilot [Panel Sales=161]

    Another oldies radio staple.

Probably better known these days than their number 1 hit 'January'.
Pilot were a very strange act. Very popular for a very short time, had
two big hits and then quickly faded away. Though some of the band would
become part of the roster of EMI session musicians and a couple of them
ended up playing on 'Wuthering Heights' by Kate Bush.

(NEW) KILLER QUEEN - Queen (Chart Entry 26-Oct-1974 at No. 23) [Panel
    Sales=114]

I guess this is the most famous track in these breakers.

One of my earliest memories of watching Top Of The Pops was seeing Queen perform this record. That would have been a week after this chart.

(NEW) NO HONESTLY - Lynsey De Paul [Panel Sales=89]

Lynsey De Paul, not to be confused with Lyn Paul.

Lynsey co-wrote 'Hot Shot' by Barry Blue. Her own chart career was a bit
hit and miss but behind the scenes she was quite involved with the music industry.

PLEASE YOURSELF - Tots [Panel Sales=92]

Some sort of spin-off from Jelly Tot sweets apparently.

I'd forgotten about Jelly Tots. I did like them back then.

(NEW) TELL HIM - Hello [Panel Sales=97]

Another oldies cover. Interestingly they didn't change it to "Tell Her".

Another single that sounds a bit like the Glitter Band. Produced by Mike Leander.

Or proving her right about ending it.

I kind of forgot that because it's one of the few songs with "Summer" in
the title that Steve Wright doesn't dig out every time there are two
    sunny days in a row.

    48. (NE) The Glitter Band-a-a-a Let's Get Together Again

I think they played on their own recordings.

They did, but seemingly not on Gary's.

Mike Leander played all the instruments on the records. I believe the Glitter Band just played on live performances.

I'm not sure what gave him the idea to spin them off into a band in
their own right but it's fortunate that we still have some music we can
    listen to.

    He wasn't as good though.

    b03 (b03) I SURVIVED - Adam Faith [Panel Sales=217]

    Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.
I guess he was trying to come back because of the Stardust films with
    David Essex?

It seems likely. Faith was also manager of Leo Sayer so perhaps that
also inspired him to want to make a comeback.

Indeed he worked with Sayer's co-writer/producer on this album.
Doesn't he play a manager in the films too?

    b06 (NEW) MAGIC - Pilot [Panel Sales=161]

    Another oldies radio staple.

Probably better known these days than their number 1 hit 'January'.
Pilot were a very strange act. Very popular for a very short time, had
two big hits and then quickly faded away.

I think I first heard of them when Q Magazine ran a feature about bands
who had been called "The new..." and it claimed that Pilot had once been touted as "The New Beatles".

(NEW) KILLER QUEEN - Queen (Chart Entry 26-Oct-1974 at No. 23) [Panel
    Sales=114]

I guess this is the most famous track in these breakers.

One of my earliest memories of watching Top Of The Pops was seeing Queen perform this record. That would have been a week after this chart.

Is that the one where Freddie has a fur coat and no shirt?
I obviously didn't see that at the time but it's a clip that seems to
show up so often (possibly because there aren't that many clips of Queen
    on TotP to repeat).

PLEASE YOURSELF - Tots [Panel Sales=92]

Some sort of spin-off from Jelly Tot sweets apparently.

I'd forgotten about Jelly Tots. I did like them back then.

I can't remember if I ever had them. I assume they were full of
additives that have now been banned?
