    This one's been in the calendar for a while because Johnny Mandel,
    co-writer of the MASH theme, died earlier this year. Since then, Toots Hibbert, who also finds one of his songs covered here, has died, and it
    turns out one of the other songs was written by 2020 COVID victim John
    Prine.

    Playlists are here. Strangely enough, when I started there was only one Spectrum track on Spotify but now there are many more. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/35Sxf1c6PfEq9qrAMIkqV1?si=_ww4xYJLQ6GKzRcyzjVVbw

    Number one the next week I suspect. Huge, but her one really big hit.

    He seemed so old on ToTP. Probably younger than me now!

    8. (5) Brian May Too Much Love Will Kill You

    I think the only song recorded both with a lead vocal by Brian and Freddie
    in their history?

    9. (7) Manic Street Preachers/ Fatima Mansions Theme From M*A*S*H/ (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

    E's are good.....

    I remember when the controversy blew up, John Humphries had to say "E's
    are good, E's are good" on the Today Programme.

    3.-a-a (3) Undercover Baker Street

    Bizarre cover.

    Bizarre in the sense that it's hard to believe anyone would think they
    could improve the original, or even have a viable alternative.

    4.-a (13) Tasmin Archer Sleeping Satellite

    Number one the next week I suspect.

    2 weeks later, knocking the Shamen down to 3.

    Huge, but her one really big hit.

    True, although she wasn't quite the one-hit-wonder she's now remembered as. Coincidentally, last week she released a boxed set of her complete 1990s recordings.

    7.-a-a (8) Lionel Richie My Destiny

    He seemed so old on ToTP.-a Probably younger than me now!

    *Googles* OK, so he was born in June 1949 which means he was about a
    year older there than I am now.

    8.-a-a (5) Brian May Too Much Love Will Kill You

    I think the only song recorded both with a lead vocal by Brian and
    Freddie in their history?

    I'm not a Queen expert but that seems likely.
    Aside from that one single in 1998, they resisted the Genesis option of promoting a singer from within their existing lineup.

    9.-a-a (7) Manic Street Preachers/ Fatima Mansions Theme From M*A*S*H/
    (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

    Was this a charity record or something like that?

    Yes, both tracks were from NME's Ruby Trax compilation, which marked the
    40th anniversary of the singles chart, the NME itself and what was at
    the time still called The Spastics Society.

    A strange combination.

    I can't imagine the Fatima Mansions got any airplay at all, presumably
    they were just included because theirs was the most extreme track on the album.
    There were two more single releases, from the Farm and Dannii Minogue,
    but those just had B-sides by the same act as the A-side.

    I travelled past the real Fatima Mansions at the time they
    were being cleared, about 12-15 years ago now, on the Luas.

    I hear they weren't a cheerful place.

    18. (26) Stereo MC's Connected

    Soon to be ruined by a million and one carphone warehouse adverts

    And yet still not as annoying as the Dandy Warhols song that was in the Vodaphone advert.

    22. (NE) Doctor Spin Tetris

    Not LLord Lloyd Webber's greatest contribution to music.

    28. (22) Boy George The Crying Game

    Strange cover of a strange song.-a Not ineffective though.

    I've heard worse.

    35. (NE) Crystal Waters / Sabrina Johnston Gypsy Woman (Remix)/Peace
    (Remix)

    Interesting linking of 2 songs from a while before.

    Another charity single (from the Red Hot + Dance album).
    Remixes are by "Joey Negro" and David Morales respectively.

    45. (NE) Eric Clapton Layla - Unplugged

    A lot of radio play.

    Unsurprisingly. Not a big sales hit though.

    46. (47) The Beautiful South 36D

    Pretty much down the dumper by now, only to be saved by their greatest
    hits album a couple of years later.

    And possibly by the arrival of Jacqui Abbott. Ironically, this song was
    one of the reasons Briana Corrigan left the band.

    65. (34) EMF They're Here

    Didn't realise this archetype of 1990 was even still around in late 82.

    Still having hits in 1995!

    89. (NE) Marshall Hain Dancing In The City (Summer '92 remix)

    I remember Rick Wakeman doing a live version of this on the stylophone,
    on a retro show hosted by Danny Baker - Question of Sport type format. Probably around this time.

    Strangely I don't remember that at all, even though it's exactly the
    sort of thing we would have been watching.

    I've done a bit of YouTube and I reckon it must have been an episode of Bygones, which I probably saw but wouldn't have paid much attention to
    because I wouldn't have recognised much of the stuff they were talking
    about. It's not the same episode but you can see them playing that game

    And one of those is from 16 years earlier (unless you're saying you specifically remember this re-issue).

    Anyway, I know you're just waiting for a long list of songs that have
    other versions. So here we have:

    3. (3) Undercover Baker Street {cover of the Gerry Rafferty hit}

    8. (5) Brian May Too Much Love Will Kill You {later released as a
    Queen single with Freddie Mercury on vocals, though obviously that
    version was recorded before 1992}
    9. (7) Manic Street Preachers/ Fatima Mansions Theme From M*A*S*H/ (Everything I Do) I Do It For You {covers of the film theme and the
    Bryan Adams hit}
    11. (12) The Prodigy Fire {samples 'Fire' by the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown}
    14. (NE) R.E.M. Drive {not an official sample but arguable inflence by
    David Essex's 'Rock On'}
    16. (NE) Mike Oldfield Sentinel (Single Restructure) {reuses the
    original theme from 'Tubular Bells'}
    19. (21) Messiah feat Precious Wilson I Feel Love {cover of the Donna
    Summer hit}
    20. (20) Daniel O'Donnell I Just Want To Dance With You {cover of a John Prine song which was also a country hit for George Strait}
    22. (NE) Doctor Spin Tetris {a version of the Russian folk tune
    Korobeiniki (-U-+-C-+-#-||U-|-+-+-|-+) which is of course known from the video game}
    23. (NE) Neneh Cherry Money Love {samples 'For The Love Of Money' by The O'Jays}
    28. (22) Boy George The Crying Game {cover of the Dave Berry hit}
    37. (NE) Sex Pistols Anarchy In The UK {also covered by Megadeth and
    Green Jelly}
    38. (NE) GSP The Banana Song {samples the theme from the Banana Splits}
    44. (NE) Betty Boo I'm On My Way {the riff at the end sounds a bit like 'Lady Madonna'}
    52. (37) Orbital Radiccio (EP)
    [Halcyon; {samples Opus III's cover of 'It's A Fine Day']
    55. (NE) Chaos Farewell My Summer Love {cover of the Michael Jackson hit}
    56. (25) The Smiths How Soon Is Now {1992 reissue} {sampled on 'Hippychick' by Soho}
    59. (40) Freddie Jackson Me And Mrs Jones {cover of the Billy Paul hit} 66. (35) Sinead O'Connor Success Has Made A Failure Of Our Home {cover of the Loretta Lynn song}
    68. (45) Izzy Stradlin Pressure Drop {cover of a Toots & The Maytals song}
    69. (42) KWS Rock Your Baby {cover of the George McCrae hit}
    83. (81) Spill Don't Wanna Know 'Bout Evil {cover of a track by John Martyn} 93. (70) Spectrum True Love Will Find You In The End {cover of a Daniel Johnston song}
    95. (NE) Nancy Davis Higher And Higher {cover of the Jackie Wilson song}
    99. (RE) Acen Trip II The Moon {samples the theme from 'You only Live Twice}

    So, a lot of covers in 1992 eh?
