• This old chart from 2001 is making it hard

    An innuendo-laden Number One in what I consider one of the patchiest
    ever years for chart music - in the sense that there were lots of good
    tracks (even some in this chart) but a disproportionate number of my
    least favourites ever. Also includes a song about the fourth man on the
    moon, and a song co-written by two people who met on opposite sides of a lawsuit. Oh, and a cover of a song that was in the 1998 chart I posted
    last week.
    Apparently today is the 21st anniversary of the first episode of The
    Tweenies, if you want something topical.

    Chart dated 8th September 2001

    This is the chart that features in the first issue of ChartsPlus that I bought. It was the second issue of the publication though, it is now up
    to issue number 993 which means this chart should be from a mere 991
    weeks ago.

    The chart is officially described as "The Official UK Singles Chart - Supported by worldpop.com

    Anyone remember worldpop.com? It was one music website and forums I
    never really bothered with. Founded by ex-Radio 1 DJ Peter Powell it was pitched as a rival to Dotmusic but in November 2001 it went into administration which also caused some embarrassment at CIN / OCC due to
    the controversial nature of the sponsorship deal. The website had only launched in January 2000 so didn't last very long.

    1.-a-a-a (NE) Blue-a-a-a Too Close

    An awful song. A few days after this chart 9/11 happened, which led to a rather bizarre outburst from Lee Ryan: rCLWhat about whales? They are
    ignoring animals that are more important. Animals need saving and thatrCOs more important. This New York thing is being blown out of proportion.
    Who gives a **** about New York when elephants are being killed?rCY

    2.-a-a-a-a (1) Five-a-a-a Let's Dance

    I do like the bass to this song but the rest of it is so 2001.

    3.-a-a-a (NE) Uncle Kracker-a-a-a Follow Me

    I quite liked this one at the time but it sounds a bit bland now.

    4.-a-a-a (NE) Louise-a-a-a Stuck In The Middle

    I remember the video where she sort of recreated the scene from
    Reservoir Dogs. This was a bit of a dull cover.

    5.-a-a-a (NE) Emma Bunton-a-a-a Take My Breath Away

    This was released off the back of 'What Took You So Long' which was not
    only a number 1 but also a decent song. This one was inoffensive.

    6.-a-a-a-a (2) So Solid Crew-a-a-a 21 Seconds

    I couldn't stand this one.

    7.-a-a-a-a (5) Eve ft Gwen Stefani-a-a-a Let Me Blow Ya Mind

    One track that seemed to be unavoidable at the time. Not too bad.

    8.-a-a-a-a (3) Sophie Ellis Bextor-a-a-a Take Me Home

    I quite liked this one.

    9.-a-a-a-a (4) Nelly Furtado-a-a-a Turn Off The Light

    I quite like the album. This is OK but there are better tracks.

    10.-a-a-a (7) Jamiroquai-a-a-a Little L

    He / they had really got bland by now and just seemed to be recycling
    the same ideas.

    11.-a-a-a (8) Ian Van Dahl-a-a-a Castles In The Sky

    Excellent dance track.

    12.-a-a-a (9) Atomic Kitten-a-a-a Eternal Flame

    Nothing beats The Bangles original.

    13.-a-a-a (6) Kosheen-a-a-a Hide U

    A great song from a very good album.

    14.-a-a (11) Little Trees-a-a-a Help I'm A Fish

    I'd forgotten about this. Probably with very good reason.

    15.-a-a (10) Wyclef Jean-a-a-a Perfect Gentleman

    Radio 1 wouldn't stop playing this (see also numbers 7 and 19).

    16.-a-a (NE) The Charlatans-a-a-a Love Is The Key

    Another decent Charlatans track.

    17.-a-a (13) Jennifer Lopez-a-a-a Ain't It Funny

    Nope, and it's not very good either.

    18.-a-a (NE) DJ Luck & MC Neat ft Ari Gold-a-a-a I'm All About You

    I don't recall this one at all. This was thier last chart hit (of 5 hits
    in total).

    19.-a-a (15) OPM-a-a-a Heaven Is A Halfpipe

    Another Radio 1 favourite. I sort of liked it at the time.

    20.-a-a (12) Robbie Williams-a-a-a Eternity/The Road To Mandalay

    I quite liked both tracks though they were typical Robbie Williams style songs.

    23.-a-a (18) Train-a-a-a Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)

    I quite liked this. Strange how it would take them another 9 years to
    have another top 20 hit and then another two years after that to have a
    mega hit.

    24.-a-a (17) Destiny's Child-a-a-a Bootylicious

    Excellent song. I love the Stevie Nicks sample, it helps make the song.

    25.-a-a (NE) Lifehouse-a-a-a Hanging By A Moment

    I quite liked this one at the time.

    26.-a-a (20) D12-a-a-a Purple Pills

    Or Purple Hills as on the version played on Radio 1.

    47.-a-a (41) DJ Otzi-a-a-a Hey Baby

    Soon to be number 1. This was charting on import and apparently had both
    the same catalogue number and track listing as the UK release which
    meant when the UK version was released it made a 45-1 climb on the chart rather than being classed as a new entry.

    72.-a-a (65) Aaliyah ft Timbaland-a-a-a We Need A Resolution

    She'd tragically died just a week before this chart was announced.

    I suppose it's just before the Kylie single came out. But OTOH, that
    Geri single hasn't been heard much since.

    Still, time for the versions

    1. (NE) Blue Too Close {cover of a US Number One by Next, which
    contains samples from Kurtis Blow's Christmas Rappin'}
    4. (NE) Louise Stuck In The Middle {cover of the Stealer's Wheel hit} 8. (3) Sophie Ellis Bextor Take Me Home {reworked cover of a single
    by Cher}
    12. (9) Atomic Kitten Eternal Flame {cover of the Bangles hit}
    24. (17) Destiny's Child Bootylicious {samples 'Edge Of Seventeen' by Stevie Nicks}
    29. (24) Christina Aguilera/Lil' Kim/Mya/P!nk Lady Marmalade {cover of
    the Labelle hit, also a hit for All Saints}
    33. (21) M.O.P. ft Busta Rhymes Ante Up {samples 'Soul Sister, Brown Sugar' by Sam & Dave}
    42. (32) Roger Sanchez Another Chance {samples 'I Won't Hold You Back'
    by Toto}
    44. (36) Wheatus A Little Respect {cover of the Erasure hit, also a
    hit for Bjorn Again}
    45. (35) Shaggy ft Rayvon Angel {based on 'Angel of The Morning}
    47. (41) DJ Otzi Hey Baby {cover of the Bruce Channel hit}
    50. (33) Raven Maize The Real Life {samples Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'}
    59. (37) Tall Paul Vs INXS Precious Heart {samples 'Never Tear Us Apart} 60. (43) Janet Jackson Someone To Call My Lover {samples America's 'Ventura Highway'}
    74. (NE) Alien Ant Farm Smooth Criminal {Cover of the Michael Jackson hit}
    77. (75) 2Pac Until The End Of Time {samples Mr Mister's 'Broken Wings'}
