• The future teaches you to be alone - so here's an old chart from the past (1998)

    From Chris Brown@extreme_rice@yahoo.com to uk.music.charts on Sun Aug 30 15:01:18 2020
    From Newsgroup: uk.music.charts

A classic August chart battle here, and because it isn't 2020 there are
also hits from the blockbuster movies and the World Cup. The chart also includes a single that Mark & Lard had as their Record of The Week on
Radio 1 for three weeks without it making the Top 40.
And if you're looking for something topical... well, there's a remix of
a song that was released for Record Store Day yesterday. And somebody in
this chart was in the news a fews days ago for denying he was a sex pest.

Playlists are here. Some significant gaps on Spotify still, but I think
I found everything on YouTube - and if you watch all the videos you get
to see Danny Dyer and Angus Deayton. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3yCvWCtY0MpotTWY8FP6oo?si=WT1z-Yg0Q62Fhk6w8OaCqQ

Yes, the publicity did refer to tracks outside the 50 being played (I
haven't caught up with the show myself yet). My comment was more along
the lines that if they were counting the Manics as Britpop, this would
be among the Top 50 sellers. And indeed it was.

    it was called.

1.-a-a-a (NE) Manic Street Preachers-a-a-a If You Tolerate This Your Children
    Will Be Next

I was never that keen on this one.

2.-a-a-a (NE) Steps-a-a-a One For Sorrow

Their second top 10 hit. For all they were successful I don't think they
made an awful lot of money. I remember reading they were all on wages,
at least in the first year or two. One of the band (Faye Tozer) married
a businessman from Sunderland and lives just a few miles from me,
admittedly in one of the posher parts of the area.

    3.-a-a-a-a (1) Boyzone-a-a-a No Matter What

    I didn't mind this one.

4.-a-a-a-a (2) Stardust-a-a-a Music Sounds Better With You

I quite liked the video that appeared on the Chart Show which was almost
a parody of the Chart Show graphics.

    5.-a-a-a (NE) Honeyz-a-a-a Finally Found

They seem to be long forgotten now. OK song.

    6.-a-a-a (NE) Faithless-a-a-a God Is A DJ

I bought this on CD single though it's not their best. I bought it the
week of release because it was something like 99p.

    7.-a-a-a-a (3) Corrs-a-a-a What Can I Do?

In hindsight the band were overrated. This one is dull.

8.-a-a-a-a (4) Savage Garden-a-a-a To The Moon And Back

Another I quite liked. My sister was a big fan and had all the albums,
went to see them in concert etc.

    9.-a-a-a-a (5) Sweetbox-a-a-a Everything's Gonna Be Alright

I didn't mind this one though it seemed to annoy a lot of people.

10.-a-a (NE) Madonna-a-a-a Drowned World (Substitute For Love)

Back when she could make the top 10 with just an average record.

11.-a-a-a (6) Sash! ft Tina Cousins-a-a-a Mysterious Times

    Another decent song by Sash!

    12.-a-a-a (7) Alda-a-a-a Real Good Time
13.-a-a (NE) Mansun-a-a-a Being A Girl (Part One) EP
[CD1: Being A Girl (Part One); Hideout; Railings
-aCD2: Being A Girl (Part One); I Care; Been Here Before
-acassette: Being A Girl (Part One); Wide Open Space (Trouser
Enthusiasts Mix); Mansun's Only Acoustic Song]

    Two I've long forgotten.

    14.-a-a (8) Spice Girls-a-a-a Viva Forever

I did like this one. Awful video though and I suppose it didn't help
that Geri had left the band but only after this video had been made.

15.-a (10) Pras Michel ft ODB & Mya-a-a-a Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)

    Great track.

    16.-a (15) Brandy & Monica-a-a-a The Boy Is Mine

Suerior R&B hit that was also a US number 1 if I recall.

    17.-a (11) Cleopatra-a-a-a I Want You Back

They were treated just like a joke duo weren't they?

    18.-a (12) Simply Red-a-a-a The Air That I Breathe

Basically just Mick Hucknall and hired hands by now. I did like The
Hollies version but wasn't keen on this.

    19.-a (NE) Electrasy-a-a-a Morning Afterglow
    20.-a (NE) Truce-a-a-a Eyes Don't Lie

    Two more I don't recall.

    25.-a (21) B*Witched-a-a-a C'Est La Vie

The video to this is so bad it's both laughable and makes 'Viva Forever'
look like a work of art.

    35.-a (27) Leann Rimes-a-a-a How Do I Live

The track that defied all chart trends in 1998 with it's massively long
top 20 run in which it yo-yo'd around the chart.

    39.-a (23) Placebo-a-a-a Pure Morning

    Great song.

    41.-a (34) Des'Ree-a-a-a Life

Anything that rhymes seems to be the motto for this song.

    42.-a (31) Mousse T vs Hot'N'Juicy-a-a-a Horny

I think I mentioned once before that this is possibly the first (big)
    hit to mention the internet.

44.-a-a (9) Embrace-a-a-a My Weakness Is None Of Your Business

It would be a better song if the lead singer could actually hold a note.
Big drop, the kind of which was becoming more common place by now.

    it was called.

1.-a-a-a (NE) Manic Street Preachers-a-a-a If You Tolerate This Your
    Children Will Be Next

I was never that keen on this one.

I did like it and I'm not sure why I didn't buy the single at the time
(except that I was going to buy the album).
Turns out the B-sides were quite good and one of them even got promoted
onto the album when they did a 20th anniversary reissue.

2.-a-a-a (NE) Steps-a-a-a One For Sorrow

Their second top 10 hit. For all they were successful I don't think they made an awful lot of money. I remember reading they were all on wages,
at least in the first year or two.

Often seems to be the way with this sort of act, doesn't it?

One of the band (Faye Tozer) married
a businessman from Sunderland and lives just a few miles from me,
admittedly in one of the posher parts of the area.

I'm not sure who my nearest member of Steps is but suddenly I'm curious.

-a-aCD2: Being A Girl (Part One); I Care; Been Here Before
-a-acassette: Being A Girl (Part One); Wide Open Space (Trouser
Enthusiasts Mix); Mansun's Only Acoustic Song]

    Two I've long forgotten.

The Alda song was annoying but a rare Top 10 hit by an Icelander.
The Mansun track is maybe most notable for having a Chart-Show-style
juddering stop at the end of Part One (which is all you get on the single).

    14.-a-a (8) Spice Girls-a-a-a Viva Forever

I did like this one. Awful video though and I suppose it didn't help
that Geri had left the band but only after this video had been made.

I remember that getting some attention at the time, althoguh I suppose
as she's on the record it's not unfair to have her avatar in the video
anyway. Either way though the amination hasn't aged well.

15.-a (10) Pras Michel ft ODB & Mya-a-a-a Ghetto Supastar (That Is What
    You Are)

    Great track.

I realised eventually he wasn't saying "put a limit to Warren G".

    16.-a (15) Brandy & Monica-a-a-a The Boy Is Mine

Suerior R&B hit that was also a US number 1 if I recall.

It sounds like it would have been.
I was never keen on it but I can see the skill involved.

    17.-a (11) Cleopatra-a-a-a I Want You Back

They were treated just like a joke duo weren't they?

Bit harsh, considering they were a trio.

    18.-a (12) Simply Red-a-a-a The Air That I Breathe

Basically just Mick Hucknall and hired hands by now.

As much as the band was always named after him and it was always him n
the album covers, I think it was the early 1990s when he officially
became a solo act and put the others on wages.
I was never quite sure why he dropped the band name for a few years when
    he was effectively already solo.

    I did like The
Hollies version but wasn't keen on this.

I'm sure his love of reggae is sincere but that doesn't mean he can

    19.-a (NE) Electrasy-a-a-a Morning Afterglow
    20.-a (NE) Truce-a-a-a Eyes Don't Lie

    Two more I don't recall.

I actually saw Electrasy play their hit live (I think they were
supporting theaudience) and it was definitely their standout song.
I do remember Truce were some sort of RnB act but I don't really recall
    the song.

    25.-a (21) B*Witched-a-a-a C'Est La Vie

The video to this is so bad it's both laughable and makes 'Viva Forever' look like a work of art.

At least the song is a bit more fun.

    35.-a (27) Leann Rimes-a-a-a How Do I Live

The track that defied all chart trends in 1998 with it's massively long
top 20 run in which it yo-yo'd around the chart.

And it "lapped" her follow-up single.

    39.-a (23) Placebo-a-a-a Pure Morning

    Great song.

I found them generally irritating but this was a slight departure and
worked well. Even though it includes the lyric "a friend with breasts
    and all the rest".

    41.-a (34) Des'Ree-a-a-a Life

Anything that rhymes seems to be the motto for this song.

Although in fairness, I too would rather have a piece of toast than see
a ghost. I love toast, in fact I might make myself some now.

    42.-a (31) Mousse T vs Hot'N'Juicy-a-a-a Horny

I think I mentioned once before that this is possibly the first (big)
    hit to mention the internet.

First big hit, yes. The first Top 40 hit I know of to use the word was 'Digital' by Goldie featuring KRS-One in late 1997.

44.-a-a (9) Embrace-a-a-a My Weakness Is None Of Your Business

It would be a better song if the lead singer could actually hold a note.

The original B-side version is even worse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEXBTzff9ME

Big drop, the kind of which was becoming more common place by now.

Though I think it was still unusual to drop from the Top 10 out of the
Top 40 at this juncture. I can only think of the Wedding Present and the
Pet Shop Boys having Top 10 hits with only one Top 40 week between now
and the chart stretching past Top 12.
