"The Stones of Blood" starts off with the usual in-TARDIS banter
between the Doctor and his companion. The Doctor's hat going up
and down on the central control column was a whimsical touch.
But we soon get serious when an ominous warning to "Beware the
Black Guardian" comes through the air, which allows the Doctor
to drop some exposition about cosmic balance, blah blah blah...
The search for the third segment of the Key to Time brings the
Doctor and Romana to Earth, with the Doctor delighted to be
back. We also see some creepy types in robes worshipping
something in a stone circle under a full moon. Gullible fools!
Sure, we all know if it sounds too good to be true, it usually
is. They'll learn the hard way that nothing good will come from
worshipping unseen entities. It might take three more episodes
though.
At the start of the quest K9 is left back in the TARDIS on
"guard duty", but he gets a much bigger role later on when
called into action. While Romana, being a woman, and against The
Doctor's well-meaning advice, chooses unsuitable shoes for the
occasion and you just know that they are going to have to come
off at some stage. (Like any normal Saturday night out
anywhere!) The moral of the story is, the Doctor is always right
though. Romana's tweed cap looks quite fetching too but that
wasn't going to stay on either, as we returned to a more
glamorous Romana in episode two... complete with decent boots.
The Stones of Blood starts to resemble a creepy rural folk
horror story with stone circles, ravens, some mysterious
happenings, a Druid like cult - that worship an ancient goddess
- and locals who seem just a little too pleased to see a couple
of strangers wandering about... Philip Hinchcliffe was gone but
this could have been straight out of his era. BUT, just when
we've settled in for a spooky mystery, the story swerves into
sci-fi territory with alien killer stones, people transmatting
to different dimensions and a spaceship in hyperspace... which
turns out to be a courtroom in space with a pair of flashing
sparkly globe things in charge of an alien justice system that
wants to execute the Doctor.
The main villain of this story is Vivien Fay, who seemed to be
one of the all-too-helpful locals. But when she is not dressing
up as a feathery bird and prancing around the stone ring,
pouring blood onto stones (Ogri) to bring them back to life, is
really an escaped prisoner called the Cessair of Diplos that's
been on the run and hiding out on Earth for a long time. As far
as villains go, she's not that fearsome, but she can control the
Ogri to do her bidding. To cut a long story short, one of the
things that Cessair has stolen is a necklace which just so
happens to be the third segment of the Key to Time. Fortunately,
the Doctor was on to her so this silver skinned minx was not
going to get away with it... and the justice machines finally
got their fugitive. We first met Vivien Fay at the stone circle,
at the end she became a part of it! How fitting.
The shift from Gothic horror to intergalactic legal drama is
quite entertaining, even if it all turned a bit bonkers towards
the end. The main star of the story was Professor Rumford, who
stole most of the scenes that she was in. While the Doctor and
Romana just did what they do best it was K9 that got a decent
role in the story... he went from guard dog to Romana's saviour
to near death - being wounded in action - back to helpful
companion when he had been repaired. K9 showed what a faithful
companion a robotic dog could be. "The Stones of Blood" was the
Doctor, Romana & K9 Show in action once again.
I have always had a soft spot for "The Stones of Blood" and
still find it very enjoyable. For me, 9/10.

Realistically, they probably didn't intend for us to see her

we're probably supposed to assume she's bad.
AGA's idea that Vivien was an Ogrus is intriguing, though.
In the show she is described as the Cessair of Diplos, an alien
criminal, not an Ogri. So not one of the living stones. But, she
was controlling them as she was powerful. (Because of the
necklace.) So she was kind of their leader... the ones that were
on Earth anyway. I'm sure there were still some on Ogros.

I don't, but nothing in the story we saw indicates the opposite

Looking like an Ogri would have made her stand out like a stone

Were there humans when they were evolving on Ogros?
Their seeming preference for human prey may simply be because
we're larger than most of the other prey available in that area.
To a large creature moving relatively slowly, a squirrel would

they got some blood to recharge themselves, they couldn't move

Things were definitely moving slowly. Perhaps that is normal when
one's only minions are giant rocks.
She was probably trying to attract more worshippers, probably in
the hope of offering more frequent sacrifices. More food might
have made the Ogri more powerful.
She had plenty of time to do that when they were building Stonehenge.
Do you figure all standing stones are Ogri?
Why are they standing at exactly the right places to keep track
of solar phenomenon? That seems strange.
What better place for some Rock-like creatures to 'hide' than in amongst
a group of Rock-like Rocks??
And having a group of Humans dropping by occasionally to 'worship' the
rocks would provide a reasonable source of fresh Blood.

FWIW, there is a difference. Something to do with religious
orders, etc.
But in the actual episode, Boscombe Hall was referred to as
the site of an old Convent.... The Sisters of Saint ______
(something).
Sounds like it was both, then. If we want to call it a former
convent, that's fine with me.
Just doing a search on 'nunnery', the definition given, apparently, by
"The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language" is ....
Quote
noun
1. A convent of nuns.
2. A house in which nuns reside; a cloister or convent in which women >reside for life, under religious vows. See cloister, and convent.
3. A place of residence for nuns; a convent.

Shakespeare died before James came to the throne. I think of him

James was only on the throne for five minutes anyway. It's funny,
come to think of it, that we talk about Jacobean culture at all.
I guess it's a good reference point, at least.

Nope, Shakespeare during during the Reigh on King James I.
In fact Macbeth is supposed to be a parody on Guy Fawkes and the attempted attack on Parliement.

You're right. James reigned from 1603 (in England) to 1625.
Shakespeare died in 1616, so I guess he did see some James.

I didn't see Dave's reply but he'd certainly know all about that
King James!

still alive... and that is Dave's specialist subject.)

Well... if Dave was looking for me to praise him directly he
needs to stop the nonsense with his gang of kooks. I'll consider
relaxing my filters then. His post count might drop a bit though
so that's probably why he prefers to engage with them and not
his RADW fam.
