• Praise for writing

In contrast to the usual umratic moaning about the scriptwriters can I
express praise for Friday's episode which was beautifully crafted and exceptionally well acted. It came as no surprise that the writer was
Katie Hims who can usually be relied upon to be above average (though we listened to one of her standalone plays recently which failed to impress).

Congratulations to all involved - I think there is an argument for this
going into a list of all-time great episodes. What would other umrats
put in such a list? Obviously the Great Ambridge Post Office Robbery
    would be one.

I have one problem with the content of the script. I honestly do not
believe that Harrison would have mentioned Lily by name. At least not
without her approval which he did not have. I also felt it was a little contrived; he had various opportunities to leave and did not take them -
yet was against a possible deadline for being elsewhere, but that is a personal take - I would have left at the earliest opportunity to avoid confrontation and it therefore reflects my own approach, not Harrison's.

Death of Grace must be on the list.

    Niggle diving off the roof.

Elizabeth recounting being abandoned at the service station.

    Jenny revealing her pregnancy.

    Sid and Kathy's two hander?

Death of Polly by Pat really got me at the time.

Jill in the church following the death of Lady Di perhaps?

I have to disagree over your first two choices and my memory of the
others is a little too hazy for me to agree or disagree without
listening again. It's only because the "Ablazing Grace" episode has
been repeated in modern times that I remember it.

I think of each of those first two on your list as very contrived. The
first came with the subtext that it was being performed expressly to
piss off ITV and the second was cobbled together for the n,000 episode
to fulfil the prediction that somebody nice was going to die. There
have been some great storylines and some great incidents but
storylines and incidents do not a great episode make IMO.

I think the work which went into the first one does justify its position
even though the pre-story is poor.

I can agree on Niggle as it was closer to melodrama than drama perhaps.

It was Doris who sussed that Jenny was pregnant but I cannot recall the
    detail of the reveal.

Death of John, and/or the following (discovery) one? I can't remember
the details, so maybe that wasn't memorable?

The last time I remember hearing the doom music (not saying it was the
last time it was used) was when a tractor battery blew up, seriously
injuring umbrella (Tony was it?) - resulting in him surviving but losing
his eye. I can't remember whether the actual episode was memorable,

The ITV thing has been argued about ever since; I suspect it's now not
provable - if it was the intention, any documentary evidence to that
effect would have been kept Top Secret, and is now probably not
findable. (What does seem definite is that they wanted to get rid of
Grace's best friend - Ysanne Churchill was it? - who was agitating to
get cast members to join Equity, or something like that.)

Yes, it was at the height of melodrama.

I would agree with that one. I perhaps should have been clearer about
the sort of episodes I was thinking of - more about innovative or
particularly good use of the medium, an episode that would have been
difficult to do on television, for example. Last Friday's would likely
have had very boring visuals but in audio only we could be completely
immersed in the interplay between the two characters.

For that reason so many of (what I consider) all-time greats involve
either a small cast (often two) or a confined space (hence my invocation
or the PO Robbery). There's also the way that in audio there can be
sudden twists that would be telegraphed by the visuals. The knifing of
Rob qualifies, as does the assault on Kathy but also Sid and Jolene's
    shower scene.
