I know there's been recent chat about Thunderbird but I can't find it
any more. This is just to say that I have today updated it in two goes
from version 140.x.x to version 153.2.0 (having backed up all 40-odd GB first - that includes all the local archives as well as what's currently
on the server), and can report that it seems to have gone smoothly and
that it is now lightning fast.
This has been a Public Thunderservice Announcement.

40 G seems a bit large to back up though; what I back up, which is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\thunderbird, which I understand is
rather more than I need to just to back up my thunderbird profile, is
349 MBytes. I presume your 40 G was mostly "what's currently on the
server" - not sure why you're backing that up!

No, it's the entire Thunderbird folder. It includes (as I wrote) all the
local archives as well as the mailboxes on the server. I manage three charities as well as having a private life so there's a great deal of archived email. I backup the entire folder because that has always
proved the most straightforward way to reinstall TB.
