I have received an email from my energy supplier asking me to make an appointment to have my gas meter replaced as the current one is
potentially dangerous due to its age or make. I do not have a gas supply!

Yes, it was genuine. It included my latest bill.

Was it for 0.00, or an actual non-zero amount? Did it contain threats of disconnection? Stories of such - including man turning up do to same -
have been around since well before smart meters, I think even well
before privatisation. (Do you have a _pipe_ that terminates?)
My energy supplier replaced my meter (they said they detected a leak), a
year or two ago I think. The one they fitted is a smart model, but
cannot be used in that way for technical reasons (I think the main one
being that I have gas from them, but electric in a quaint manner, and
smart gas meters only work if they can talk to a smart electric meter). However, their system "knows" I have a smart model, so about two or
three times a year I get a "we can't talk to your smart meter" letter.
I've given up telling them (what they should know anyway), and would be
quite happy to send them a reading once a month or whatever if they
asked for it; more than once, they've promised to implement that asking.
Of course, I'm never getting such requests. I think I did even manage to
get a compensation payment (for my trouble) out of them - but that was
clearly the "throw some money at him and hope he'll go away" rather than actually fix it.
My bills (paid by DD) show an estimated amount (less than I'm using). I
believe energy arrears cannot be claimed when over a year ... (though
for them to become _aware_ of any arrears, they'll have to actually do a reading themselves or ask me to (which I'll give, and honestly).

Electric bill. I didn't think to qualify it as it is the only one they

It was the electric bill they sent, as expected. The property is only

And in terms of the banks being incompetent the good lady wife recently legitimately received a welcome sum of money having sold an asset.
Taking my advice she sought to invest it in Premium Bonds - as I thought lending it to the government for the chance of winning a prize or two

Her bank would only allow her to buy -u1000 in a single day. It is legitimately her money. She is lending it to the state - not some fly
