• Colonel Danby Rides again (I had to make this ob-Archers somehow)

I switched over from Woman's Hour this morning and arrived on Radio 4x
just in time for the start of The Waiting Game <https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001ngw1>

I was chuckling away at the parody of nineteenth century melodrama
when I suddenly thought: hold on - are they playing this seriously in
a 1960s sort of way, or are they playing it for laughs?

I'm not familiar with the writings of Margaret Potter so I honestly
don't know whether she wrote it as comedy, drama or comic melodrama.
I'm wondering if I'm like the audiences for the recent film
"Obsession" who are reputed to have laughed all the way through the
tragic bits and that I've mis-pitched my response to The Waiting Game.

Anyway, with five more episodes to go, I ought to have time to decide
what it is before it's over. Norman Shelley - Colonel Danby from
Ambridge to you and me - (over)plays Sir Geoffrey Banner and I'm
finding it to be a hoot!

rather small knickerflash (thongflash?) in that I know his son, Antony,
who is the Prompter (among other things) at the Staatsoper Unter den
Linden, in Berlin. One of the best things Norman did, according to
Antony, was to record Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner in
their entirety. For a lovely nostalgic bask in those dulcet tones, try this:

I wonder how they'd go down with today's small people?

ISWYM. 'Serious Drama'? Or a 60's subversion of a time-worn trope?

Some of the incidental music was interesting.

I no longer have a small person in my life as the one who used to be the smallest person is now as tall as I am and aged 14. However, when she
*was* small, she very much enjoyed my reading her Winnie-the-Pooh in installments on the family's visits to me. I see no reason why she
wouldn't enjoy Norman's reading of the stories as well as mine.
