It is very common for charities and interest groups to suggest
storylines for soap operas. Some years ago my sister lobbied
(unsuccessfully) The Archers for a story on adult literacy (an
initiative on which she was running in Dorset).

That one gave me a "Error 503 Service Unavailable" (_after_ I'd ticked
the I am not a robot). But I used my usual method on the first one, and
got it. It quoted a BBC person saying more or less

It is very common for charities and interest groups to suggest

and that they don't generally succeed - though I imagine such input _is_ _used_, just not without checking.

I know that, apart from their own advisors, the programme reaches out
to external experts when thy need to. I was one degree of separation
from their Non-stipendary Minister Advisor at the time St Stephens was introducing one so I got to see how that went on. I suppose it makes
sense that companies and other organisations would lobby programmes
like TA when they hope to get their point of view put across.

However in the old days the village would be setting to with huge fund
raising activities to make good the ravages suffered but apart from some discussion of a scavenger hunt (and when did anyone do one of those?)
nary a mention apart from the stress on the vicar. The foundation of
this soap apart from the Archers is the village setting but the writing
is of an urban nature ignoring the village aspect.

The Borchester show is mentioned at length. If George wants to be
respected by the village then throwing the weight of his and Amber's
skills behind the needed fund raising might earn a lot of respect locally.

I think the key words in your second paragraph are "the old days." I
live in a village setting, walking distance (well, it used to be
walking distance for me years ago - not so much now) from the town
centre. I think Covid-19 did for a lot of the community cohesion and fund-raising togetherness. The Baptist Chapel had been closed and
converted (see what I did there?)for a long while but both the
Methodist Chapels - the tiny one in the centre of the village and the
big one on the periphery which used to serve two communities - have
closed and have planning permission to turn them into apartments. Our
St Stephen's is called St Hilda's and is just about hanging on and
it's the only religious building in the village which is. I'm not
hopeful that Ambridge will fair better than us.

We have heard nothing of the Ambridge show this year - I suspect it will
    not fare well either.
