In that briefest of brief pauses before Barwick Green, did I hear the
words "Oh Bugger" and the sound of tearing Dead Ringers scripts coming
from the writing room next door?

Who knows. Brian may be able to pass a mental capacity test but his
ability to make the right rational decisions remains entirely
questionable and I submit the following evidence:
    a) no farmer would issue instructions to not harvest land when a
    contract exists - last Summer
    b) calling the police on Adam using a farm landrover in accordance with
    his contract of employment
    c) Brian's attempt to terminate a contract of employment which he does
    not control
    d) his inability to respond correctly to an email from a farmer in
Hollerton is a contracting client and causing embarrassment to Ed as a
    result
    e) his refusal to engage constructively with Martyn Gibson - the largest single contracting client - plus the complete confusion over what was
being grown where implying he had not bothered to check recently.
    f) his intention to use Ed on the systems - believing Ed is a digital native

My personal theory is that the kick in the head from Joe's cow has left
a lesion of some form which is now affecting the rational decision
making part of his brain. So not dementia - memory is working - but he
    cannot make the right decisions.

    I think you are right.
