The last 2 messages (and replies thereto) in UMRA have appeared in
Thunderbird with an orange diamond next to the Subject in the list of
posts. Can somerat tell me why?

Same here - but I think it has been happening for a while.

The yellow (golden?) diamond icon indicates "new message" since the last
time the folder was opened https://support.mozilla.org/fr/kb/new-thunderbird-128-nebula

Clearly this is part of Thunderbirds argot.

Weird: whenever I try to follow that link, it redirects to https://support.mozilla.org/fr/kb/nouveautes-thunderbird-128-nebula,
which is of course in French! (Which Edge then offers to translate - and
    fails when I say yes.)
[I could probably struggle through the French, but am puzzled _why_ this happens - any ideas?]

Odd, it never occurred to me to connect the two! I've just asked Google
where the name (for the software!) came from, and it says it was renamed
from its original project name, Minotaur, which was intended to be a
companion to Phoenix (now Firefox), as a more dynamic, fitting name,
though isn't entirely sure why specifically Thunderbird was chosen.

Chrome threw up the French page, too but when I clicked on English
(French was underlined) in the little box top right, then clicked on
    Translate underneath it worked.

I suspect the fact that we got French in the first place might have
something to do with the "fr" in the URL.

Thanks! That box isn't there in Edge, but is there at _bottom_ right.

Sounds very plausible. Though you'd hope they'd give you the English
version if you ask for it - or redirect to it. (They obviously parsed it correctly to know which French page to give us!)
