• Help with Eternal Spetember

In preparation for the demise of the Berlin server in a couple of months
I though I'd try to setup Infernal September.

I've setup a new account in TB pointing at news.eternal-september.org
but when I try to subscribe I only see a very small number of
    newsgroups, all starting eternal-september

How do I populate that list with all the uk. groups please or whatever
else do I need to do ???

    TIA

Well now I've RTFM and seen what I need to do to login, I now see a
sightly longer list, but still no uk. or rec. hierarchies :(

I assume from having logged in that you have applied for and set up an
account and received an email with instructions. I don't recall having
had any problems when I did this back in the past.

If I right click on Eternal September in the right hand pane of TB ans
then on Subscribe I get a panel with a list of groups. There is a
Refresh button on it that might be of some help. Then ensuring you have Current Groups selected rather than New Groups might be a good idea.
Then I would suggest doing a search for the groups you want rather than
trying to eyeball them from the list.

If that doesn't help then err ...

Asssuming you've gone through the registration process and had the email
from Ray Banana (yes that really is his name), you need to tell
Thunderbird to authenticate with the new information contained in that
email. Here's one set of instructions I've found - Thunderbird has a
rather weird way of being told to re-prompt for that information:

    *Configure Authentication (Crucial):*
rCo Right-click the new "Eternal September" account in the left panel and select *Settings*.
rCo Click on *Server Settings* under that account.
rCo *Tick the box: "Always request authentication when connecting to this server"*.
rCo /Note: If you do not do this, you may only see a few, or zero, newsgroups./

Don't worry, you won't have to do that every time you use Thunderbird -
once the new information is entered into TB and it's been told what to
    do, it remembers.

You may also need to refresh the list of newsgroups: right-click on news.eternal-september.org in your Thunderbird, select Subscribe, and
    click the Refresh button.

Once you've got the full set of newsgroups available, that Subscribe
option has a "Sh_o_w items that contain:" box which does what it says on
the tin: you can type any part of a newsgroup name in there and it'll
show you all that contain what you type. (Case independent - I just
typed ARCHERS and got alt.music.searchers [!] and UMRA.) Tick ones you want.

    Hope that helps.

According to the email I got, Berlin isn't giving up until September 2027.

    Oh, that's good news....

Yes I did all that and have successfully posted to the TEST group.

Yes, did all that too. When I Refresh New Groups I see a handful more,
but no UK groups at all.

Have also now tried searching without success. I'll contact their help
    people later and RTFM again.

    Thanks anyway.

Just went in again with nothing changed from this morning and the groups
    are all there.

    Weird, and thanks again....

Though I believe they're not taking on any new subscribers from a
somewhat earlier date (which I believe may have already passed).
