Just now on the Beeb, there is apparently some kind of music festival
going on this weekend. One lady being interviewed said that she was
excited to be about to see some artist's vocals.

There seems to be a misunderstanding of the meaning of 'vocal' here.

It means seeing the artist actually making the noise.

Rather than simply listening to a recording; or the artist
    being interviewed.

This allows BBC TV to fill up countless hours of air-time from
interminable repeats of "Top of the Pops"* drawn from over 40
years of recordings; themed evenings from the same source
and edited output of contemporary events such as Glastonbury.

To say nothing of classical output, such as the Proms.
