So with the caveat that this action will make not one blind bit of
difference, I wanted to remind Rus^H^H^H everybody that coordinated
action is called for the week of 23 August, whereby we are all to
disconnect from the Playstation Network and refrain from any online
purchases or connectivity in protest of Sony's announcement that they'll
be winding down physical game discs by 2028. I already don't play online
and don't subscribe to the paid service, so this is no additional burden
for me. I recognise that others may not be able to participate as
easily, and I don't judge those people harshly.

I did run some testing Friday afternoon, and I discovered that it's not
enough to block the hardware from connecting at the router level. If
your Playstation 5 is able to resolve DHCP (or otherwise have an IP
address asigned) then all games will simply spin cycles attempting to
dial home and sync trophies. You need to remove the network config
completely for wifi networks, or pull out the cable for wired networks,
in order to be disconnected completely and still play your games.

I'm going to miss game discs, and also having any admiration at all for
Sony as a corporate institution. Maybe it's better that I only approach
them with scepticism and disrespect. I don't like thinking that the
healthiest thing of all is to simply disengage from a company if they
won't sell me what I'm willing to buy, but absent other options I don't
know that there's a different choice to make. See you cats at the retro
