It's said by people (who don't know any better) that government should
be run like a business, efficient and profitable. I wish I could credit
the journalist who observed that government can't emulate one critical
part of business, which is to stop doing things that have no return or
that are difficult to do. If we expect that a government serves all of
its citizens as equally as possible, then it must be *inefficient*
because it has to expend more effort and time to serve the marginalised
or sidelined. And it must do so out of both obligation to and respect
for the people it serves. Imagine if any government declared that it
would not provide a service to the wheelchair-bound just because it's
slightly too expensive to build ramps and provide documents. I'm not
saying that the Sony situation is at all comparable, but it's important
to understand that Sony has elected to stop serving the gamers who want permanent disc media. That's their prerogative as a business, and if
they're going to abandon that market and give up on serving it then
that's their cowardly, craven, greed-laden choice as a private business.

    Play:
    --=--

Panzer Dragoon Saga (SAT) - I didn't actually play much this weekend, as primary school is starting up and work is getting hairy. But Panzer Saga
has in common with the Yakuza games an unusual quality, in that you can continue to play even if the game system is powered off. Scenarios and situations play themselves out offline and the player is motivated to
consider how and when all of the unmarked side missions might be
experienced. One of the best things about playing on the FPGA system is
that the save data is much more malleable than it would be on the real hardware, and I've accidentally discovered that I have more than three
save slots available to me because the MiSTer creates unique save data
for each game disc. This means that I have nearly the entire run of all
four discs in terms of available save data.

    Want:
    --=--

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (PS5) - A nicely affordable reprint
coming in the mail today. I keep forgetting that the OG Suikoden games
have an excellent narrative wrapped up in imperfect play mechanisms, so
I'm kind of looking forward to seeing how that was improved in its
    spiritual sequel.

    Bin:
    -==-

    Nothing game-related.

-KKC, who had slightly too much sake Sunday night.

I think this is the exact kind of tolerance and open-mindedness with
which Sony's decision is best tackled. :-)

    Play:

Outrun 2006 (PSP) - played on the Outrun 2 tracks. Apparently it would
have been much too sensible to do this by playing Outrun 2.

A Little Bit of... Puzzle League (DSi) - Time Trial again.

This reminds me of my multi-VMU approach to getting extra Shenmue 2
saves, initially on the actual Dreamcast. IIRC the extra slots ended
up being focused on such vital content as the duck races.

    Want:

To eventually have several consecutive seconds of non-heatwave
conditions, so I can reasonably play games on my PC at some point with
neither man nor machine melting. I mean, they'd probably still be old
games. Just potentially not quite as old.

    Bin:

    Mambo^WHeatwave number 5 being imminent.
