Renewing technical certifications is an absurd exercise and it's a
wonder that I put up with the notion at all.

    Play:
    --=--

Daytona (PS3) - Just to put the new Thrustmaster T80 through its paces.
This is a nice little steering wheel! It's my first proper one, not
counting the first-party joints you got on the Sega Saturn. I have a
handful of wheels for the OG Playstation too but they're all table-top
units that are pretty much designed to be used once and then forgotten. Because I have flappy paddles I played manual transmission and
immediately was unable to drive properly because the pedals aren't fixed
on the floor. I was essentially having to hold the platform down with my
left foot while doing heel-toe with the right, and that's hard to do
when you're trying to shift down through turn 4 of the Daytona USA oval.
What I need to *not* do is set this thing up permanently on the same
desk that I use for work.

Kinect for Windows (PC) - I got a Kinect with a Windows adapter! It
doesn't work. It's because of the operating system, and honestly I'm not surprised that the current build of Windows doesn't support a game
system peripheral from more than ten years ago. Oh well.

    Want:
    --=--

A disc resurfacing machine - Arriving today. Let's see how well it
works. If it's all it claims then I'll have working copies of Forza
Horizon 2 and 3 to run.

    Bin:
    -==-

    Nothing game-related.

    Expenditure:
    -----=-----

    Balance forward - $2,337

    Chakan (MD) - $10
    Mystic Defender (MD) - $10

    Total to date - $2,357

-KKC, who hopes to get more gaming in next weekend.

Minecraft (Linux) - mostly more of that less-horrible trial chamber,
the one conveniently near the stronghold. (Well, maybe not so near
vertically.) Fewer deaths for once, though I can't help feeling the
loot was slightly disappointing, with quite a few emeralds. At least
that should be useful for buying the absurd number of arrows I'll
probably need to have any chance of finally tackling that End ship.

Absolutely. Someone else should do it for you.

It's curious that I associate steering wheels with arcade machines so
strongly that it never quite occurs to me that I could just... get one.

    Want:

    A steering wheel^W^W^WNothing.

    Bin:

Still stubbornly finding ways to die in Minecraft trial chambers. I
don't think I should really be finding them tricky, they're basic
enough - perhaps that's why I just always seem to keep underestimating
    them somehow. Bah.

It's sooooooo nice! I forgot to mention that mine came in the box, so I
had documentation and everything with it. The pedals have thread holes
on them so that you can mount it to an enclosure or a rig for permanent installation, or just to keep them still so that you can make the
    immersion more thorough.

I may have also ordered a T150 that has force feedback.

The T80 and T150 have compatibility lists that straddle three
generations of Playstation. The T-80 in particular just emulates the
left analogue stick for most PS3 games, so it works out of the box with anything you could run off of a normal Dual Shock 3. It's sooooooo nice.

-KKC, who should invest in more Saturn-era steering inputs.

I have now received the T150. It works fantastically. The force feedback
is a bit more subtle than I thought it would be, in that I was expecting
it to spin the wheel out of my hands and lift up the desk. What actually happens is that the wheel just shifts slightly out of your hands to
indicate when something is happening on the road under the vehicle, but
never in a way to cause you to lose your grip or lose control. I like
that the wheel self-calibrates when the game starts up and does the
initial USB handshake, in that it spins all the way left and then all
the way right so it knows where the center point is.

I have now put both steering wheels properly away in their boxes. No
telling if I'll actually ever set them up permanently for use, as that
will also require permanent power and cable management.

-KKC, who has now looked into permanent steering wheel frame mounts.

Such use-the-force feedback might be limited to the Yoda edition.
