• Truncated Play Want Bin (PWBE 18 Aug 2025)

Didn't get to play a lot. Being an adult sure does get in the way of
leisure hobbies. What comes after adulthood? Death? Death sounds
relaxing. Would be harder to play games though.

    Play:
    --=--

Gradius Origins (PS5) - Oh hey, this is nice. I forgot that Gradius is functionally a series of danmaku games, and I stink at danmaku. Still
I'm glad I own it, even if the only result of playing is mild
frustration rather than joyful fulfillment. It's like own a motorcycle
    that you never ride.

    Want:
    --=--

Kemco RPG Collection Vol 2 (PS5) - Ordered. I hope they make it through
the whole library. It's stupid that they did a pile of Switch carts and
didn't do PS5 releases at exactly the same time.

    Bin:

    Nothing gaming-related.

Second childhood, of course. I'm pretty sure that's the time when you
    feature in Haribo commercials.

    Play:

Lego City Undercover (PC) - side-missiony stuff in the sandbox, with
it becoming increasingly clear that I'll probably go for 100% on this
version like I did back on the Wii U. One weird but quite noticeable
thing about the PC version is that it seems to be fully playable with
strictly keyboard controls only (i.e. no mouse or equivalent). Having
only a fairly limited number of screws loose, I of course generally
ignore that and play on controller like it's the 21st century rather
than the early 90s. But this time, I actually ended up playing it for
a good while with just the keyboard, and... it's really not a great
way to play the game. At all.

It's hard to pin down what exactly feels so awkward about playing the
game this way. I think it might be the sheer number of keys you use
contrasting curiously with the kind of game it is - you're playing
this conceptually relatively simple game like it's some overly
elaborate flight sim. Which is certainly an experience.

Amplitude (PS3) - finally started another go at the campaign, to
hopefully unlock the bonus track I missed initially. For some uncharacteristically optimistic reason I decided to try that on
Advanced, a higher difficulty level than before. But not having yet
reached the point at which that would be a problem, it's not yet been
    a problem. So that's nice.

Tetris Attack (SNES) - literally a single go on Time Trial, for
totally legitimate reasons clearly unrelated to the following.

    Want:

To expand on my self-indulgent retrospective from a decade ago. So
here's my mid-August gaming from the last 30 years, mostly from my PWB
posts, but with pre-2005 entries being from more general archaeology:

    Aug 1995 - Nethack (Linux), Joust (2600)
    Aug 1996 - Doom (PC)
    Aug 1997 - Tekken 2 (PS1)
    Aug 1998 - Wipeout 2097 (PS1), Virtua Racing (MD)
    Aug 1999 - Final Fantasy 7 (PS1), Quake (PC)
    Aug 2000 - Nethack (Linux)
    Aug 2001 - Nethack (Linux)
Aug 2002 - Virtua Tennis (DC), Shenmue 2 (DC), F355 Challenge (DC)
Aug 2003 - Ape Escape (PS1), Colin McRae Rally (PS1),
    San Francisco Rush 2049 (DC)
Aug 2004 - Um Jammer Lammy (PS1), Ace Golf (GC),
    Mario's Cement Factory (G&W)
    16 Aug 2005 - Super Monkey Ball 2 (GC)
15 Aug 2006 - Super Mario Sunshine (GC), Resident Evil 4 (GC)
14 Aug 2007 - Castlevania Double Pack (GBA) [Aria of Sorrow],
Super Mario Advance 2 (GBA), Wario Ware Twisted (GBA),
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 (GBA)
12 Aug 2008 - Mario's Super Picross (SNES), No More Heroes (Wii)
17 Aug 2009 - Bully (Wii), Water Warfare (Wii)
    17 Aug 2010 - Nethack (nethack.alt.org and nethack.eu)
16 Aug 2011 - Monster Hunter Tri (Wii)
13 Aug 2012 - Monster Hunter Tri (Wii),
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials & Tribulations (Wii)
12 Aug 2013 - Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP),
The Pinball Arcade (PS3/PSV), Need For Speed: Most Wanted (PS3)
    18 Aug 2014 - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U)
    18 Aug 2015 - Steins;Gate (PSV)
    15 Aug 2016 - Monster Hunter Generations (3DS)
    14 Aug 2017 - Elite Dangerous (PS4)
    16 Aug 2018 - Grand Theft Auto 5 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4),
    Gran Turismo Sport (PS4)
14 Aug 2019 - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2),
    Grand Theft Auto 5 (PS4)
    11 Aug 2020 - Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (PSP),
    Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (PS4)
    17 Aug 2021 - Oekaki Puzzle (PS1)
    16 Aug 2022 - Minetest (Linux), Rogue (CP/M)
    14 Aug 2023 - Oekaki Puzzle (PS1)
12 Aug 2024 - Kerbal Space Program (Linux)
18 Aug 2025 - Lego City Undercover (PC), Amplitude (PS3),
    Tetris Attack (SNES)

It's odd to see the combination of big favourites that I've played a
lot, and random games that this sampling happened to catch. Oh, and
what a remarkable coincidence that I finally caught Tetris Attack this
time. Sure, it's no Oekaki Puzzle, but it's not bad. :-)

I've utterly failed to play anything tonight, with parenting getting in
the way. I also forgot to mention that there was a lightning strike that killed some of the network equipment (and the landline phone) in my
house, so there's been a lot of rewiring going on. If I were still
    tracking expenditures I'd log the $40 I spent on a new eight-port
Gigabit switch wending its way across borders to me now.

-KKC, who is making do with an old router bridged into the wifi.

I suppose you could see that as a lucky escape of sorts, or curse your
luck for being affected by a lightning strike in the first place.
Maybe both. :-) Anyway, I hope all said adulting went/goes well.
