• Double trouble

Switched on the top (non-fan) oven of our AEG for lunch, and after a few minutes the RCD tripped. I turned off the element selector and
thermostat controls, and reset the RCD. I then turned on the element
selector, and the RCD was ok. As soon as the thermostat control was
    turned, the RCD tripped again.

Well, I'd just have to use the second (fan) oven. I turned the selector
to fan-assisted, and the indicator light came on above it. Then I turned
the thermostat to 200-#C. The RCD didn't trip. A minute later I sensed something was wrong - I couldn't hear the fan and the internal oven
light was off. Also the indicator light above the thermostat wasn't on.
The oven remained cold. So both ovens had failed! Out of interest, with
the top fan element selector still off, I turned the top oven thermostat control. The RCD immediately tripped. Goodness knows how that device is
    wired!

It's 11 years old, so not too bad although it should have lasted longer.
So it's over to Curry's this afternoon to have a look at a new one.

Sanity check... our oven won't run if the clock isn't set. That means each
time after a power cut you turn on the oven, wait for it to heat up... and
it's cold. Just pressing Set on the clock is enough to set the clock from flashing 00:00 to a time of midnight, and then the oven works. The clock is
in an awkward place so it's not obvious that it's flashing.

Don't suppose the first trip reset the clock which prevented the second oven from starting?

Ours is 26. 11 seems awfully short. I'd be looking to change the element (probably about -u20 if a generic one is available) first. Especially since
a new AEG is probably going to be circa -u500.

I expect you need both the element selector and thermostat engaged for power
to pass to the element, so the RCD only trips when the element is powered. Although if there is an earth leak in one component then I suppose that
could cause trips in the upstream part even if the downstream part is turned off.

I don't know Electrolux (AEG/Zanussi/...) specifically, but thermostats can
be decently priced so if it's the thermostat it's worth checking what the
    part cost is.

Thank you. You are right. I had completely forgotten that (I have
another very serious problem I am dealing with and the fault appeared
when I was trying to deal with that one, and didn't have time to deal
    with the oven "fault" properly).

Unfortunately I cannot cancel the item now. The only option John Lewis
offer is to receive it and send it back, although I'll contact them
tomorrow and see what can be done. Seems daft that at present the
delivery isn't until next Friday and they can't just cancel it. I don't
mind paying a small cancellation fee if that's required.

Yep - over that with delivery/installation/collect old one.

If I was younger I'd attempt the repair myself, but as I mentioned in my
reply to TNP it's a fitted oven and weighs over 50kg. Getting an
electrician to replace the part won't be cheap (but cheaper than a new
AEG!), and I'll expect a guarantee for the work.

I'd check whether it's possible to access from inside the oven. Mine is a cooker which is on wheels, so you can drag it out and unscrew the element
from the rear. But for an integrated oven I'd not be surprised if there's access without having to remove it from the cabinetry.

Perhaps the element has a push-type fitting and it's secured with screws
inside the oven, then you just pull it out from inside. You may be able to look for clues if you can find a picture of the replacement element.

Similarly the thermostats may be on a control panel that's accessible for
the front. I'm not sure whether it's a bimetallic thermostat, which would
need thermal contact with the oven, or something electrical using a thermocouple which would allow the thermostat to be remote.

    Indeed: <https://support.aeg.co.uk/support-articles/article/how-to-replace-upper-heating-element-4>

I really don't understand the Amazon reviews for the non-OEM element
which give it 5 stars and say that it took only 5 minutes to change.
Mind you, it also fits Non-AEG ovens, so perhaps those only take 5
    minutes... <https://www.amazon.co.uk/Electrolux-Tricity-Element-Equivalent-3491255018/dp/B00QKJI278?>

I'd forgotten that several years ago the bottom oven grill element had
also decided to play up and trip the RCD. So I just stopped using it and
used the top one instead. I just checked and the bottom one still trips
the RCD when it gets hot. Annoyingly, though, the bottom fan oven -
which was working ok - also now trips the RCD, and as far as I km
now doesn't use the grill element for fan heating. I've cancelled the
new oven order, but called out an AEG-approved electrician who will be
here Thursday. Not cheap, but a /lot/ better than a new oven.

    I hope so:
    <https://support.aeg.co.uk/repairs/information/fixed-price-repair>

"a. The price of the Services includes the following:

    i. repair of the reported fault/s, at the time of booking, for a single domestic appliance;"

"b. The following are not covered by this service:

iii. repair of any additional faults to the same appliance, not reported at the time of the initial booking, unless the appliance was not functioning therefore faults could not be identified;"

So as long as you told them about the 3 faults when booking it's covered. -u199 for three sounds good value.

(I'm not sure why people balk at repair costs - it's like fixing anything a
car is minimum -u200: maybe -u100 for the part plus -u100 for the labour. Just because you can buy a new appliance for -u500 doesn't make the repair any
    less work)

It also says that if they can't repair it there will be a discount on a
    new AEG product.

I would not expect that to amount to very much. Perhaps a discount off RRP, when you can buy it cheaper online from the usual suspects.

    Ah, almost:

"7. WHAT IF MY APPLIANCE CANNOT BE REPAIRED?

    c. In the above cases, you are entitled to a refund of the price of the
repair less the Call Out Fee of -u80.00 (inc. VAT). The offer of a replacement will include a discount of -u75 (inc. VAT) in addition to your refund and any promotions at the time of purchase when purchased directly
from us through our Contact Centre."

so you can write (almost) the minimum repair cost against the cost of a new appliance sold direct. In which case you'd need to find it -u75 cheaper elsewhere to make shopping around worthwhile.

My charge is -u174. It'll be interesting to see how long the repair takes.

The repair has just been done, and took the guy just over 30 minutes. I
had to help him get the oven out and on the floor! The elements were not removable from the front; the back and top had to be removed as
explained in the AEG webpage I posted earlier.

Both grill elements had shorted to earth. The electrician reckoned I
hadn't done too badly with one going after 6 years and the other 11
years. Still, seems to me they should have lasted longer.

Indeed. That is relative crap I would have thought
