Growing up I was excited by the couple of original Beatles singles my
parents had, thinking they were "old" and worth millions.

When it was pointed out that *Millions* were out there, whide made them
almost worthless was a critical teachable moment :)

Fortuntely (or not, depending on your POV) I've never been bitten by that completist bug. Even when I was really into certain bands, as long as I *heard* the rarer stuff, it made no difference if it was a taped copy.

It often staggers me how few of some things that were churned out by the millions survive.

I still have the Pye portable shown centrally in lot 7428! In the early sixties I drilled a hole in the chrome to the right of the (missing) right-hand knob so I could put a 3.5mm jack socket in. That way I could
listen via headphones without disturbing anyone else. Last time I
checked (about 10 years ago) the radio still worked.

The price of s/h vinyl (and for that matter, new vinyl) has become
    ridiculous.

I have, in my collection, at least one LP, bought new in 1970 and only
ever played a half-dozen times, for which some sellers are asking re43,000.

After 198 stopped broadcasting R4, but while it was still powered on
with the end of life announcement, I dug out my LW receiver (to
direction find which transmitter was broadcasting the announcement).

The whole of LW band was dead ... I thought I heard some data broadcast

I've gotta cuppel of valve radios if you want tony..rescued from widows
    skip so to spik

Not worth anything but fun to tinker with.

Got a very nice valve portable too. Switched off around 1958 when the aforesaid's mum bought a tranny...

    I have a couple of R1155 WW2 receivers and an Eddystone 940.
All are destined for eBay when I get round to it (and after
    testing).

It can't but it can't be an image on a cheap superhet. Talk sport is frequencies between 1053 to 1107kHz so a typical cheap superhet with an
IF between 450 and 470kHz there will be image reception in the long wave bands.

Indeed, with an IF of 465 kHz and LO above there will be an image at
2*465 above, so 1053 kHz could break through on LW apparently at ~123
kHz, a bit off the usual bottom end of LW, and 1107 kHz at ~283 kHz,
    right at the top end.

Not much apart from the main BBC channels are still on plain old DAB
(MP2 codec). Pretty much everything else is now DAB+. Classic FM changed
a couple of years ago. Some of the newer BBC channels such as Radio 3
Unwind are DAB+ too. A DAB radio will appear to tune to these channels
but no sound will come out.

To my mind, the biggest error with DAB. No backwards compatibility. No
    ability to upgrade.

Fortunately, I have at least one working DAB and/or FM radio in every

I've learned one very important lesson today about portable,
multi-band radios: one should check the batteries once in a while.

Are your DAB radios capable of handling DAB+?

I think I've got four of 'em and no, they are all just bog-standard
    DAB.

Why? Are they all about to become obsolete?

    Nick

Not much apart from the main BBC channels are still on plain old DAB
(MP2 codec). Pretty much everything else is now DAB+. Classic FM changed
a couple of years ago. Some of the newer BBC channels such as Radio 3
Unwind are DAB+ too. A DAB radio will appear to tune to these channels
but no sound will come out.

To my mind, the biggest error with DAB. No backwards compatibility. No ability to upgrade.

Agreed. I've got a 25-years old Roberts radio which is only DAB, and is gradually losing stations. I also have another one which is only 13
years old and has the same problem.

much like the mythical Radio 5 SX Formula1 ?
5LSX used to work on my Pure Evoke3, which was not DAB+, maybe it's changed?-a I no longer use the Pure radios as most newer stations are
DAB+, my last couple of cars have been DAB+, the one before was DAB only.

BBC R5 SX is still DAB according to my little portable. SX2, SX3 and so
    on are streaming only.

It was one of the big cricket series going to TalkSport 2 that made me
first buy a DAB+ portable. The cars have been DAB+ since at least 2013.

Back in the earlier days of DAB I had a Videologic DAB tuner that didn't
see 5 Sports Extra in the main station selection, you had to tune to
Radio 5 and then select some sub-channel. I've not seen that anywhere
else. The same applied to some part-time Parliament channel and Radio 4.

If you hadn't told me, I probably wouldn't have noticed until
everything disappeared. I only tend to listen to two stations and they
are both BBC and both are still there.

How can it be a harmonic when its below the MW frequency?

It can't but it can't be an image on a cheap superhet. Talk sport is frequencies between 1053 to 1107kHz so a typical cheap superhet with an
IF between 450 and 470kHz there will be image reception in the long wave bands.

Oscillator is usually high, or has that changed in the last 50 years?

After 198 stopped broadcasting R4, but while it was still powered on with
the end of life announcement, I dug out my LW receiver (to direction find which transmitter was broadcasting the announcement).

The whole of LW band was dead ... I thought I heard some data broadcast at one point, but that turned out to be my wireless mouse!

There's a couple of weak ones, Poland and Algeria I think. Allouis is still transmitting data (time) on 162, but at about 6dB down on when it had programme.

At circa 2300h last night I had a listen on the LW band. Stations heard
    were:

171kHzrCafaint station, voice just audible but unreadable, probably Morocco.

225kHzrCamoderate strength, Polskie Radio, Polish rapper

252kHzrCastrong station, voices using French language, probably Algeria.

IrCOve heard Polish rap before, I even once heard an expression in one rap

I had a variation on this theme. In Mexico City, I once got into a cab
in which the driver had to shut off the AM/FM radio, then the two-way
radio, so that his battery could actually turn the engine over. He
repeated this when I got back into the cab after stopping at Office

Davey and Jeff will be reassured to hear that not a lot has changed in
that respect and AM radio - especially localised AM radio - is still a
big thing in the capital and beyond. They don't have the benefit of a
UK-style regulatory authority so the name of the game is to crank up
your own output so that your station will cut through against the
neighbouring stations who have also cranked up their output. If you
want to listen to something specific then it's often easier to find
    their internet stream.

...which is what we did when a friend of ours was doing a live session
from a radio studio just a couple of miles away in the district of
Chacarita. Unfortunately, I don't remember much of the performance.
Being live radio but without the precision of the BBC, the live
session was being delayed and delayed and I'd just opened this bottle
of Limoncello - which for the record is bottled at a higher strength
and in a bigger bottle over there - and before I knew it, the bottle
was empty and so was my head.
