I've bought some nubuck cleaner that I haven't used before, it has that typical nail polish pear-drops smell, so I checked the MSDS and the only "active" ingredient it listed was 1-5% isopropyl alcohol, which I know
doesn't have that acetate type of smell.

Actually when I checked the manufacturer's website they do have an
ingredients list separate from the MSDS, which lists butyl acetate as
    well as the IPA.

    <https://saphir.com/products/omnidaim>

Could the acetate be such a small component, yet so pungent that it
    doesn't require listing?

It seems to work very well, lifts out dirt/stains well, hasn't fully
dried off yet, but no darkening.

Well organic solvents, water and a surfactant.

Probably cheaper to mix your own

Once you know which solvent(s) to use, yes. I've run out of trike now,
but have plenty of IPA and a litre of butyl acetate looks about the same
price as 100ml of the leather cleaner, so I might try it next time I
    need some.

the surfactant looks a lot cheaper in bulk than e.g. washing up liquid
    too...

It's very strange that it isn't in the MSDS. However, the MSDS I found
    was for the aerosol (<https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2619/1180/files/EN__SHAMPOO_SAPHIR_SPRAY_0525023_FDS_20240613__SP.pdf?v=1721051926>).
Is there an MSDS for the aqueous solution?

The one I found was at

    <https://www.skindhuset.dk/upload_dir/shop/0214-0218---EN---04092024---Omnidaim.pdf>

The MSDS lists the IPA as 1-5% (they don't seem to ever be exact) and
the other ingredient list showed the acetate last in the list, so
presumably a lower amount, so is there a cut-off percentage that doesn't
need mentioning? The smell is pretty noticeable

If the smell is pretty noticeable, why does that MSDS refer to the odour
in Section 9.1 as "Alcohol odour"! If butyl acetate is like isoamyl
acetate it should have a pretty strong fruity smell. In fact, at <https://www.thegoodscentscompany.com/data/rw1019351.html> it describes
it as "ethereal solvent fruity banana".

I wouldn't be surprised that if butyl acetate is below a specific level
it's concentration doesn't need to be mentioned in the MSDS.

Esters are smelly in quite low concentrations, so I'd not be surprised if
it's sufficiently low to not need mentioning. LD50 is 10.8g/kg so the
toxicity of such a weak solution probably wouldn't be an issue.

But I agree, if the MSDS mentions odour then I'd have expected it to be described, even if the components responsible for the odour aren't
    specifically identified.

I wouldn't claim to be able to tell ethyl/isoamyl/butyl acetate odours
apart, but it's one of that family.

I remember a TV programme from many years ago, that demonstrated that it
was possible to generate a third and quite different smell from two others.

The experiment involved something like 11 test tubes in a line, the one at
one end was filled with 100% of one aromatic liquid, at the other end 100%
of a different aromatic liquid, with mixtures in between decreasing in proportion in order from one end to the other.

The outcome was independently tested and found that the mixture in the test tube in the middle smelled completely different to all the rest, such as
that of oranges, when neither of the two liquids had any relationship with
    that fruit.

The flavour and aroma of pear-drops is because they contain iso-amyl
acetate and ethyl acetate, both highly aromatic esters. They are
structurally very similar, butyl acetate is between them in that series.

It gets easier with practice. I used to do quality-control testing on
