    cordless screwdriver and a portable tyre inflator some years ago, both
    of which were fairly useless and were discarded. Could it have been
    for either of those?

    I have a power adaptor delivering 30V at 333ma which powers an old HP
    printer. So perhaps you once had an old printer to go with your power
    supply?

    That could have been the case, but I think the posters who traced it
    to a (long-abandoned) cordless stick vacuum cleaner were correct.
