That's what I thought I heard some motormouth say on the radio this
morning. I could have sworn that's what he said. I did think it was a
bit outrageous, but on the other had I also thought, 'well I suppose
we had it coming.' Anyway, I did a bit of digging online and found
nothing matching. I've subsequently discovered, it must have been
*National Punch & Judy Day* - which it is in the UK today. That was a
    scary few hours! :-D

Who is it that decides which day is allocated to what stupid thing?
There seems to be a 'day' for every fucking obscure thing imaginable
and someone must be responsible for coming up with all these
inumerable, usually petty and insignificant causes. Obviously got
nothing better to do all day than think up this shit. Probably the
Tony Blair Institute or some bunch of unemployable bastards like that.

I knew someone who made a point of smoking a cigar once a year on
    national no-smoking day!

No, it was a temperance slogan. "Punch adieu day."

All kinds of special interest groups try to push their "Day" onto the
media since "National Ingrowing Toenail Day" helps them get the scourge
of ingrowing toenails across to the wider public if it gets mentions on air.

Competition is fierce, and I guess there is a Darwinian process going on
to see which ones thrive and which die quietly in the background.
