• Butane refill

I bought a butane powered mini hot knife for cutting synthetic ropes.
When I try and fill it freezing cold butane sprays all over my hands and
the bench. The place stinks and I don't dare try and light anything but
I am pretty sure no butane has gone in the tool where I want it.

What am I missing? I am using a sort of aerosol sized canister that fits
a camping stove and that I use for refilling the chef's blowtorch in the kitchen,

The aerosol gas refills should come with "nozzles" of varying sizes to
fit whatever you're trying to refill. If the size isn't right I've found
    the butane sprays everywhere.

In my (limited) experience the ones sold as cigarette lighter fuel do,
but the ones sold for camping stoves don't.

I use a bit of nichrome wire, a tension spring and a 12V battery.
