    It was, indeed, John! Efye

Now, I have a question for you - you, specifically!

When I view your posts using Thunderbird, your name is shown as "Old
John". When I view the identical post in Usenapp, your name is printed
    as "John Hill".

Perhaps you, personally, are unaware of this.

From about 1994, when uscm was founded (I joined it within a couple of weeks)
I was John Hill. I put "John" manually at the end of the posts.

This held until a couple of years or so ago, when other Johns appeared. I got old and lazy. So I decided that I would do a bit of nymshifting myself and decided to become Old John, and not put my name at the bottom of each post.

It is just possible, then, that Thunderbird is picking up some relic of this. But the message headers of current posts clearly contain "From: Old John <watcombeman@yahoo.co.uk>" and do not contain "Hill".

I have no idea why you see what you see. But note the sig.

    Hello again, John,

    Many thanks for the explanation!

I think the mystery has now been solved. As it turns out, Thunderbird has had your email address stored in my Address Book for years under "John Hill", and it has been quietly substituting that name whenever your posts arrive.

So, despite my efforts to investigate hidden headers, obscure Usenet
behaviour, and possible Usenapp oddities, the culprit was my own Thunderbird installation all along!

Your account of the transition from "John Hill" to "Old John" also makes perfect sense. The Address Book entry must date back to those earlier days and has simply never been updated.

I must say, your signature seems particularly apt in this case:

"Classic computing: Computers do what you tell them to do, not what you want them to do."

Thunderbird was faithfully doing exactly what I told it to do years ago. The problem was that I had completely forgotten giving it the instruction!

Thank you for helping unravel the puzzle, and congratulations on maintaining such a remarkable Usenet presence over the years. There can't be many people left who can say they were there at the founding of uscm (ucsm) and are still posting regularly today.

    Kind regards,

    David

John". When I view the identical post in Thunderbird, your name is
    printed as "John Hill".

    That's how things actually are!

From about 1994, when uscm was founded (I joined it within a couple
of weeks) I was John Hill. I put "John" manually at the end of the
    posts.

This held until a couple of years or so ago, when other Johns
appeared. I got old and lazy. So I decided that I would do a bit of
nymshifting myself and decided to become Old John, and not put my
name at the bottom of each post.

It is just possible, then, that Thunderbird is picking up some relic
of this. But the message headers of current posts clearly contain
"From: Old John <watcombeman@yahoo.co.uk>" and do not contain "Hill".

I have no idea why you see what you see. But note the sig.

My guess is he has you in his address book and Thunderbird is showing
the name he has for you there.

    Your *guess* ?
David already posted that the address book was the solution.
And don't add to your collection of lies by claiming you didn't see the message because nobody blieves anything you post.

You really are a stupid twit, snit.

As you are aware, John, you are one of the few people here who
correspond with me. May I ask a favour?

I'm writing to you now on my original 27 inch iMac which I bought brand
new in 2017. The SSD part of my Fusion Drive has failed, but I am now
running it from a 1TB LaCie external SSD .... and it is working well.

Earlier this year I purchased a little used 2019 27 inch iMac which is
just about perfect, but it cannot run macOS beyond Sequoia. I am now
selling it on eBay. Please would you tell your colleagues here; it may
be of interest to one of them?

    Thanks if you will. EfOe

    Hello again, Andr|- EfOe

I am responding to what appears to be your very last post on the
    uk.comp.sys.mac Usenet group.

May I ask WHY you have dropped-out of the group?

Are you posting in any /other/ Usenet group?

(Sharing my question on the 'alt.computer.workshop' group)

    *BUMP*!!!

Was that you coming back to earth in this very ancient thread?

OlrCO yellowstain is a necrophilliac. He just loves to zombiefy necrothreads.
A mere one year old thread is nothing; he has been known to zombiefy five, seven, and even older threads. I think that his record is 17 years, but I could be wrong.

    Darn that was funny !!!

Been working on an old computer. Just installed two 500 MB hard drives with
one to be Master and the other Slave. What information do I insert in my
CMOS to make things work? Questions asked are: Type, Size, Cyls, Head,
Precomp, Landz, Sector and Mode. I haven't the foggiest what to put in
there. Any assistance appreciated. This is a Standard CMOS Setup from Award Software, Inc.
