My younger son could almost have written this article. You may recall
that I'd provided a BBC 'B' computer in 1983. I was overseeing the
development of two boys who each obtained an A+ in Computer Studies at
GCE 'A' level and then went on to obtain good university degrees, one in >>> mathematics and the other in physics. Some of what they learnt rubbed
off on me!

What makes this On Topic here? What does it have to do with Macs?
Absolutely nothing as per usual.

It's all about telling the truth!
Truth, poor girl, was nobody's daughter.
She took off her clothes and jumped into the water.

This quote is a famous riddle and literary reference.
It originally appeared as a playful clue in the short story The
Fascinating Problem of Uncle Meleager's Will by the mystery author
Dorothy L. Sayers.
The Answer: The riddle is a clever personification of the ancient
proverb "Truth lies at the bottom of a well."
By taking off her clothes, Truth is stripped of all illusions and biases!

Well spotted! Are you familiar with the works of DLS or did you have to look it up?
I was tempted to bring up Diogenes and his lantern, but thought that Uncle Meleager's (successful) attempt to get his niece to "frivol" was more appropriate.

Sadly, John, I had to "look it up"!

Sometimes I wish that I had paid far more attention the my English master at school and perhaps have not 'opted out' to join the Royal Navy at the tender age of just sixteen.
However, now I have the Internet!
Diogenes was an ancient Greek philosopher and the most famous figure of the Cynic school. He is legendary for his extreme asceticism, his public mockery of societal norms, and his sharp wit. Instead of writing philosophy, he taught
through outrageous, lived examples.
Several iconic legends define his legacy:
The Lantern Search: He famously walked through the crowded streets of Athens in broad daylight carrying a lit lantern, telling people he was simply "looking for an honest man".
Life in a "Barrel": Rejecting all material wealth, he lived in a large ceramic
jar in the marketplace, begged for his food, and survived off handouts.
Telling off Alexander the Great: When Alexander the Great once approached the resting philosopher and offered to grant him any wish, Diogenes casually replied: "Stand out of my light," complaining that the king was blocking his sun.
Plucking a Chicken: When Plato defined human beings as "featherless bipeds," Diogenes plucked a chicken, brought it to Plato's academy, and declared, "Behold! I have brought you a man."
One can read more about his life and philosophy on Wikipedia's Diogenes Entry.
