• Microsoft degrading older Office installations on Mac

From July, Office 2019 will only work in read-only mode and similarly for Office 2021 later this year.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/microsoftoffice/s/vOlz8ICdP

This only affects Macs and seems like particularly shitty move by them.

I think a lot of people (such as I) will be abandoning M$ Office in favour

The future belongs to FOSS software anyway. It is platform independent.

That is what I use for decades.

IIUC, only Macs running Monteray and older?

I think I'd find it tricky to move from Excel. I'm at the point where I don't know if it's a good spreadsheet app or not. It's pretty much the only one I've used for about 40 years, so I'm not sure of the next nearest thing, or the learning curve involved.

If you are not using scripts extensively Excel and Calc are pretty much
the same. The learning curve will be extremely steep. Most of your files
    would also run in Calc.

I use both applications for decades at a I would say not to ambitious level.

I often use LibreOffice Calc for spreadsheets for my own use only. If I
have the need to send a spreadsheet to a third party I use Excel. I've
found that formulae are usually transferable, so dropping M$ Office
    could well be OK.

You can even save a Calc-File in Excel-format and send it to a third
party. But that does not work vice versa.

Yes I am aware of that.

My version of Excel - 16.109 (26051019) - can save in OpenDocument
Spreadsheet (.ods) file format. It claims to be able to open such
documents too. I've never put these claims to the test though!

It's pretty transparent going from one to the other. Cosmetically it's
looks different, but otherwise the functionality is 90% the same.
