a while but will take a closer look when IrCOm home.

I don't quite get the argument for this over Pages.

Am fully embedded in the MS ecosystem for work and libreoffice fulfills all
    my domestic needs.

I would totally support an independent developer, but -u15 with no trial
    period feels a little scammy.

Personally I use Pages mostly, and occasionally Notes, they certainly are
more than enough for my domestic needs. TheyrCOre free and already installed, and quite capable.

If I need something different/better/etc. I might try LibreOffice, or on my iPad Pro, Collabora Office.

I think for most something like Google Docs is probably one of the first
go-to tools now - unless like me you try to avoid Google stuff. But I think
a vast majority simply arenrCOt aware of the potential consequences of
Google, or at least donrCOt care.

In your humble opinion of course eh! ;-)

Just a pedantry point - one that always irritates me. How do you know
things are crap if you havenrCOt tried them?

They work perfectly well as far as IrCOm concerned, and I have used them extensively over many years. And I have tried and used many other
    alternatives over many years too.

Personally I use Pages mostly, and occasionally Notes, they certainly are

    WhorCOs standards? What standards?

One thing IrCOve learned over the years, is there are no standards, not
really. Many businesses might prefer to stick with Microsoft, I havenrCOt
come across many that donrCOt. MS has created their own standards of course. Before that many might have considered Word Perfect to be a standard
perhaps. A more likely future standard might be Google Docs.

I would think if you really want to adhere to any kind of standards, then a
TeX system would be nearest. Not that many would use it now (liferCOs too short).

Besides which, I donrCOt have a need to adhere to any standards. Everything I do is just for my personal needs, using what I consider to be my own
    standards!

Yes, could well be. It is frighteningly easy to make whole apps with AI, nowadays. All impossible to maintain in any real way, though.

Not all tasks are important enough to make that mandatory.

More recently though I have abandoned my research into using Linux, as
there are no simple, or acceptable, solutions to some of the major
features I need myself. Although one day, perhaps, financial constraints
    may force the issue.

I teach Windows for a non-profit organisation. Privately I use macOS
most of the time and as fall back I have two Linux laptops which are
always at the same level as the Macs. I still believe that macOS is the
most stable and optically the most attractive OS. A Linux Ubuntu running Wayland comes very close on my 27" Dell screen.

The FOSS software I use most is Firefox, Thunderbird and Libre Office
    on all systems.

Windows I have never intended to use as my primary system. I have to use
it in my work envirnment, but that's all.

Another CSAM-desaster by Apple would be the end of macOS for me. What I
also would never accept is that Apple - like in the UK - hast to stop E2E-encryption of iCloud (most of it) because the government is
blackmailing Apple to open backdoors. The UK-situation is not acceptable
    for a Democracy.

most of the time and as fall back I have two Linux laptops which are
always at the same level as the Macs. I still believe that macOS is the

CanrCOt argue with that. ItrCOs been my experience in general (although not always). For sure, they donrCOt get everything right, but I think they get
more right than most others do.

However, getting back to the topic, I do find that if you have an Apple
based ecosystem, particularly with modest needs (personal use), then the
Apple apps are more than adequate.

The FOSS software I use most is Firefox, Thunderbird and Libre Office
    on all systems.

ThatrCOs pretty much what IrCOd end up with I think. Although itrCOs not quite as
necessary for things like browsing or email, other than for user experience consistency.

My biggest headache now is how much IrCOve invested into the iCloud system. Nothing else comes close for the amount of seamless integration it offers. Particularly with how I use it for photo management and editing.

Yeah, that one is a bit irritating for sure. Although as far as IrCOm aware, the only part thatrCOs affected is the Advanced Data Protection feature.

According to my Take Control Book, that was not intended for general
domestic use. It was intended for high risk users - ironically, such as government officials, journalists etc.

So, for the masses itrCOs not a great issue, but our government has kind of shot themselves in the foot with that one.

Some original apps can still be obtained and run under emulation via, say, BasiliskII or SheepShaver but may not be able to open and save documents in more recent file formats. See:-

I can and still do occasionally run MacSOUP and MacWrite Pro using a
Classic Mac OS emulation via Basilisk II on my M1 Mac. Of course you can
run the final version of MacSOUP in Mojave or Mojave VM on an Intel Mac.
