• why does my iPhone 12 not see updates?

    From John brennand@no_email@invalid.invalid to uk.comp.sys.mac on Wed Apr 8 19:37:38 2026
    From Newsgroup: uk.comp.sys.mac

The past couple of times there has been an iOS update my iPhone12 pro max
is saying I am up to date. Reboot did nothing neither did turning
automatic updates off - I had to wire it to my MBAir to update via finder.
Now on 26.3.1 it is not seeing the iOS 24 update - just showing the
software is up to date message.
Before going via the Air again - anyone know whats going on and any ideas
    for a fix?
TIA for any help - JohnB

Wild guess: Storage full. An iPhone needs several GB free storage to
install new iOS-versions and delete the old one.

Before you do anything else restart your iPhone.

It usually still shows the update, but shows a message that it canrCOt be downloaded due to lack of space, with a button to go to manage storage.

We get this on both our iPhones at every update now, and have to play the offloading apps until thererCOs enough room game.

    Thanks chaps.

Yes I restarted the phone each time - and still get the "up to date"
    message.

Don't think its a storage issue as it is reporting... "56 GB of 128 GB
used" and 72 GB as being free. Although the "Offload unused Apps" is
showing as a recommendation to save up to 13.35 GB.

Still no sign of OS24 !

Beats me - will cable it at the weekend.

ItrCOs certainly a puzzle. For reference my phone is an iPhone 12 Mini, with 64GB. My wiferCOs is a 2nd gen SE also with 64GB. Both got the 26.4 update.

I tried the cable method, but for some reason, thatrCOs really slow for me (both phones on two different Macs).

Perhaps itrCOs time to try a reset?

The reset is too much of a nuclear option for this minor irritation.

The cable method is a bit slower, but as long as I use a USBc-Lightning connector and a 45w charger - it isn't too bad - certainly less than an
    hour.

Just a thought, but if it works, it could prove there was an issue
somewhere, which might be better being fixed.

I haven't tried using a USB-C to Lightning cable. But would that make
any difference really? Surely the speed will only be at the Lightning
    spec anyway.

I've no idea why its so slow now though, Im sure it used to be faster
years ago. But on a MacBook Pro, and my new-to-me Mac Mini M1, it's
really slow - like minutes to just load the device screen.

If it updates by cable though, it might fix the underlying issue still.

Lightning spec seems ok - so it depends on the other end. USB2 is far
slower than USBc - what ports are on those two devices?
Using a 45W charger with USBc port for the phone maxes out the power
    supply.

USB-C is a connector supporting various protocols including USB3.

    <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C>

As I found out recently, Yes, USB-C does not guarantee any kind of
    transfer speed in itself.

I bought a HDD enclosure last year (Orico IIRC), reasonably priced, but
had a USB-C port. So I assumed, naively, that it would be a faster speed.

I recently had a thought to check it (using the Blackmagic app), and it
looks like it is actually on a poorly implemented USB-3 protocol. The
test shows that using it across USB-C to USB-C was actually slower than
the USB-C on the drive to a proper USB-3 port - it was near enough to
suggest it's actually USB-3, but it was a reasonably significant
different that made me change the cable and port I was using.

Indeed, I've since bought a couple of new UGreen USB-3 enclosures, and repurposed that enclosure.

The past couple of times there has been an iOS update my iPhone12 pro

is saying I am up to date.-a Reboot did nothing neither did turning
automatic updates off - I had to wire it to my MBAir to update via
    finder.
Now on 26.3.1 it is not seeing the iOS 24 update - just showing the
software is up to date message.
Before going via the Air again - anyone know whats going on and any
    ideas
    for a fix?
TIA for any help - JohnB

Strangely, my iPad mini - just updated itself fine to 26.4.1

So... just went the cable to iPhone route as described above.. update
took exactly 27 minutes from start to finish.

That's not much longer than a stand alone software update - but it is an unwanted faff though :-(

And so it goes on !

Had to cable the phone up to the Air again for it to see 26.4.2 in the
    Finder and process the update.

But why? Without success, I have tried all of the suggested "fixes"
above - except for the nuclear "reset" option - as that gives too much after-hassle.

But it is really bugging me as to why this keeps happening on this one
    device.

Any thoughts or options are again welcome
