• macOS 26.4 - Age verification requirement?

    From Chris@ithinkiam@gmail.com to uk.comp.sys.mac on Wed Mar 25 17:50:25 2026
    From Newsgroup: uk.comp.sys.mac

Has anyone who's already updated to 26.4 been required to verify their age?

Seems like they snuck it into iOS 26.4 without warning. Am not massively
keen that an OS manages age definitions on my behalf. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20qwz9xzr9o

Yes, but it was quick and easy to do. It looks like it just needs me to
confrm my Apple Account login details. On my iPhone and iPad, it did
that with just my FaceID, and swiftly moved on.

On Wife's iPad it just need a login to Apple Account with the password.
    Job done.

Doesn't seem like a really big issue to me, unless you're under 18
trying gain access that is ;-).

I've just updated my iPhone, it explicitly said that it had verified my
age by the credit card I already had on file. All it demanded was a
    simple touch confirmation that I'm of age. I then updated my iPadPro;
that didn't require explicit age verification so I presume that it had propagated from the iPhone confirmation. All very quick and easy.

That's true in my case even if it isn't compulsory.

Do they not ask if you'll allow them to use your stored Wallet cards as confirmation?

Not in my case, I guess the fact that I'd put details on file gave them implicit permission.

    Updated yesterday night European time.
Urban legend! Why should anyone be required to verify the age?

The UK is a digital dictatorship. For years now.
    Tell us news

"Apple is rolling out age checks for iPhone and iPad users in the UK ..."

But according to you its an urban legendrCa

It is an urban legend in the civilised and free world.
The UK is not a part of it in the digital domain.

No. A Mac can be used without a credit card. Theoretically even without
    an Apple account/ID.

I wasn't talking about the users who hadn't logged in.

You were not talking about anything so far, dear.

I updated my iMac, iPhone and iPad in that order. The Apple Watch is ongoing.

Nothing on the iMac but on the iPad I was asked for my AppleID. I entered it, and it thought for a few seconds and then came back with "You've had that account long enough to satisfy the requirement" or words to that effect.

This seemed to satisfy the iPhone too.

I wonder if that's it or I shall be asked again ib future updates?

"After customers accept the latest iOS 26.4 software update, they will
be asked to verify their age, which they can do by providing a credit
card or scanning their ID, according to an Apple support page."

That's true in my case even if it isn't compulsory.

I've just updated my iPhone, it explicitly said that it had verified my
age by the credit card I already had on file. All it demanded was a
    simple touch confirmation that I'm of age. I then updated my iPadPro;
that didn't require explicit age verification so I presume that it had propagated from the iPhone confirmation. All very quick and easy.

Mine was even less, said as IrCOve had the Apple ID for so long no
verification needed or similar wording the young ones at work will need to
but being more mature itrCOs a non issue.
