  • Nvidia question

    I have a PC with Ubuntu 22.04 installed and operating. My monitor is a
    new Viewsonic VA2215 1920x1080, the PC's video card is an NVIDIA GeForce
    GT 710. All is good.
    I installed Ubuntu 24.04 alongside the ver. 22.04, and it went well
    except that there was no attempt to match the NVIDIA output to the
    Viewsonic. I now have a theoretical screen approximately twice the
    width of the actual screen.
    How do I force the card to try to match up with the actual monitor's
    screen? All NVIDIA drivers are present and correct. It's like watching
    a mobile quarter of an IMAX screen. At least the ver. 22.04 still
    works properly.

    Not really, I avoid the Linux/nVidia combination.

    I see why. I just went on to NVIDIA chat, and was told where to re-load
    the driver from. I did that, but when I followed the installation
    instructions, it failed with multiple reasons that require me to go deep
    into kernel creation, and other deep geek things. Way beyond my
    paygrade.
    I will abandon this installation of 24.04. I only wish that reclaiming
    the space was easier that it appears to be. Could I try to reload over
    this one?

    I have a (very old) nvidia card on slackware, so I compile drivers
    (legacy470) using a slackbuild script. This also gives me a config
    tool "nvidia-settings" which allows you to tweak various things -
    e.g. under "X server display configuration" there is a "Detect Displays" button which might help, and failing that a "Resolution" drop down
    where you can set a specific resolution if "Auto" does do what you
    want.
