    For some reason the CDC and USDA do not want to understand how the virus
    is being transmitted. Cattle and equipment movements off infected farms
    is fully restricted, but no state requires quarantine of dairy workers
    or veterinarians that go from farm to farm. Poultry farms never got
    cattle nor dairy equipment, and they have known that dairy workers on
    infected dairies also worked on one of the poultry farms that was
    infected in Michigan by the dairy virus, but no contact tracing nor
    follow up was done at that time in early 2024. None of the states with infected herds is restricting dairy worker movements and the virus
    continues to spread to dairies and surrounding poultry farms.

    Hogvet has an update on the dairy epidemic. The numbers that are
    reported are likely under estimates. For example they claim only 71
    confirmed human infections, but that is due to the fact that dairy
    worker testing essentially stopped when the study was published that
    around 10% of dairy workers tested in a random sample taken on infected dairies from several states were found to have H5N1 antibodies. The CDC claimed that they were going to start a dairy worker testing program in
    order to identify the infected workers and get them antivirals in order
    to limit the chance that the virus would mutate to better infect humans,
    but that program never got started. Instead dairy worker testing pretty
    much stopped being done. An estimated 5,000 dairy workers had worked on
    known infected dairies at that time. So my take is that around 500
    human infections had already occurred before they decided that they
    didn't want to know the true extent of human infection. Probably an
    equal number have been infected since then, and that is likely an under estimate because the number if infected dairies that avoided detection
    could be close to the number that have been confirmed to be infected.

    The articles cited by Hogvet indicate that it is understood that wild
    birds are not spreading the virus, but cattle, personnel or dairy
    equipment exchanged between farms. Even with that understanding no
    state is restricting dairy worker movements from farms under quarantine.
    Poultry farms do not get cattle or equipment from dairies. Human transmission is purposely ignored even though it has been known since
    Michigan in 2024 that a dairy worker from an infected dairy also worked
    on one of the layer farms that got infected by the dairy virus. Two commercial egg operations have been infected in the same county in Utah
    with infected dairy herds, and Utah nor any other state with infected
    herds restricts dairy worker movements from infected dairies.

    The USDA has only confirmed 7 infected herds in Utah, but Utah is
    claiming 22 herds under quarantine since June 1. The USDA do not count reinfected herds, and Utah was infected in 2024. The USDA is not
    informing the public of the true extent of the dairy virus epidemic.
    The CDC and USDA have not dealt with the dairy epidemic and human
    involvement as they should have, and they continue to not do what they
    should have been doing from the start of the epidemic.

    The claim is that only 135 herds in Idaho have been infected at least
    once (they acknowledge that some herds have been infected more than
    once) since 2024, but that is likely severely undercounted. Bulk milk
    tank testing was not started until most of the Idaho herds had likely
    been infected and cleared the virus in 2025. Google claims that there
    are 71 herds currently under quarantine in Idaho. There are an
    estimated 500 dairy herds in Idaho.

    Google claims that it takes as little as 2 weeks for a herd to clear the
    virus after it has been detected, usually 4 weeks to 3 months. The
    dairy virus passes rapidly through a herd, but a few cattle can be
    persistent viral shedders and apparently 1 cow shed virus for nearly a year.

    This just means that before bulk milk tank testing was implemented a lot
    of herds were infected and cleared the virus and were never counted as
    being infected, nor were the dairy workers on those farms evaluated.
    Just think of how quickly over 80% of the dairy herds in California were infected when they were quarantining and testing herds faster than any
    other state. California and Colorado were the only states that tested
    most of their herds and both eventually had around 80% of their herds infected. That should tell anyone that all the other affected states
    were severely under testing before bulk milk tank testing was
    implemented. Florida produced virus positive milk products, and were
    verified to have the dairy virus in waste water samples in several
    counties, but Florida never admitted to having infected herds, and do
    not participate in bulk milk tank testing so no Florida herds were ever confirmed to have been infected. How could the CDC and USDA allow that
    to happen if they were trying to contain the epidemic?

    environments for avian influenza infection that the virus has not been selected to mutate to something that can better infect the human
    respiratory tract. Sea mammals have not been so lucky, and transmission
    is rampant among them. Several South American and Antarctic colonies
    have suffered massive losses.

    but the number of herds confirmed to have been infected in 2026 have
    decreased from 81 to 79. It looks like they are starting to list the reinfected herds, but are not counting them as confirmed cases.

    The Hogvet article noted that Utah claimed 22 herds under quarantine,
    but the number confirmed had been less than half of that. Now the
    number of confirmed Utah herds is closer to the 22 herd number. For
    some reason the USDA still wants to hide the true number of infected
    herds and decreased the number of confirmed cases in 2026 even after

    Three more dairy herds in Idaho have been confirmed to be infected and
    the confirmed cases increased by 3 to 82. There has been no explanation
    for why the number of confirmed Utah herds on the list doubled, but the
    total cases for 2026 went down from 81 to 79. The new Idaho herds are
    likely not herds that had previously been infected, but are likely herds
    with no previous infection history. The USDA stopped reporting
    reinfected herds and do not count them as new cases even if the herds
    were infected in 2024. For Utah they seem to have some of the
    reinfected Utah herds on their list of Confirmed cases, but they are not counting them as new cases. There probably are not that many herds in

    When Idaho fell to 2 confirmed cases in the last 30 days (around July
    20th) the estimate of herds under quarantine fell to 62. There were
    obviously a lot of reinfected herds under quarantine that were not being counted as confirmed cases.

    I do not understand why no state has implemented restrictions on dairy
    worker movements since cattle movements off quarantined farms is
    restricted and the virus is still spreading to new dairies. Idaho has
    been infected since early in 2024. They have never restricted dairy
    worker movements and quarantine has never worked in that state even
    though they bulk milk tank test all their dairies and they know which
    dairies are infected. It should be a no brainer as to why quarantine is failing since infected dairy workers shed infective virus, and they
    understand that at least 10% of dairy workers on infected farms are

    full time workers might have to get. This seems to force workers to
    find employment at other farms and even poultry farms. My guess is that
    the swine farm that was infected in 2024 likely had dairy workers
    working at that facility. It is known that dairy workers have worked on Poultry farms that were infected.

    about it because the farm labor is needed at those multiple farms. I am
    sure that a 3 million bird layer facility would rather be down a few
    workers for a few weeks than risk losing the whole flock.

    I asked Google why dairy workers worked part time on more than one farm
    and got the answer that the dairies that only milked twice a day did not
    want to pay the workers for a full 8 hour shift, so the workers in the
    morning milking shift would leave the farm and pick up more hours on
    another farm for the evening shift. Some states exempt farm workers
    from getting full time and over time benefits (the farm workers are
    exploited to the benefit of the large farms that can employ full time workers), so that isn't the issue. The main issue is that farms do not
    want to pay the dairy workers for the time between milking. This means
    that it is the dairy workers that milk the cows and that are known to be
    the most likely workers to be infected that are the ones that work on
    more than one farm and that go to poultry farms to be able to work full
    time. This should be understood by the USDA and CDC, but they do not
    act on what is going on, and refuse to do what needs to be done in order
    to keep the virus from spreading to other farms and infecting more farm workers.

    In California it was noted that the dairy workers were wiping their
    faces with the same towel that they were using to clean the cow udders
    with. Dairy workers are infected mostly in the eyes, and transmission
    can go both ways from cow to dairy worker, and dairy worker to cow
    because dairy workers are known to shed live infective virus from their
    eyes.

    Sequence from a Utah dairy finally has been put up on the GISAID site.
    It shows that Utah was infected by the same California lineage of the
    virus that was infecting Idaho herds in May and June. None of the Texas dairies seem to have been tested.

    There may have been more than one introduction from Idaho to Utah. Some
    of the Utah dairies have been infected by Idaho strains that began
    diverging Oct. 2025.
