Trump's CDC director blocked publication of the study before he
resigned. The authors got the study published in JAMA Network Open. It demonstrates the efficacy of the covid vaccine, and was deemed to likely
have a negative impact on the Republican midterm elections. It was a
stupid thing to do because other countries have published studies
showing the efficacy of the vaccine in reducing deaths and long Covid symptoms. France and Germany determined that the vaccinated retained a
lower death rate for all causes of mortality than unvaccinated. This is likely due to the more severe symptoms suffered by the unvaccinated, and
they likely never fully recovered from the infection and were more
likely to die of other causes.
It is important that people still get vaccinated because the recently vaccinated still have fewer hospitalizations and death rate than
unvaccinated even though nearly all the unvaccinated have been infected
at least once. This may be due to the fact that the current vaccines
are designed against the current virus that has mutated, and can
reinfect those that have already been infected. Vaccination seems to be better than previous infection with an earlier strain of the virus.
