The mRNA flu vaccine project was canceled by Kennedy before completion,
and the initial report by Moderna was rejected. Moderna applied for FDA approval of the mRNA vaccine anyway because their vaccine was found to
be 27% more effective than the standard vaccine in use during the trial.
The standard vaccine had missed one of the two strains infecting most
of the public at that time. The standard vaccine is prone to selecting vaccine strains that do not match what is actually infecting people.
The mRNA vaccine can be designed against the virus that is infecting
people, and can also be multivalent in that multiple mRNA sequences can
be used as it is in the Covid vaccine. The standard flu vaccine is multivalent, but they choose vaccine strains that they think are closely related to the virus that will be infecting people, and they are often
wrong or select vaccine strains too distantly related to be very
effective. They do not use the virus that is actually infecting people
to make the vaccine. Covid demonstrated that mRNA vaccines could
rapidly be updated and evolve to match the evolving virus.
The FDA advisory panel has recommended approval of the mRNA influenza
vaccine use.
