Sort of off topic but considering the global warming science denial that
the NCSE has to deal with. Trump proposed to get rid of the mileage
standards for new cars, and now gas is supposed to be $4.50 a gallon. I remember around 18 years ago when gas prices hit $4.00 a gallon. I had
a coworker that had bought a Humvee that got 8 miles to the gallon. It
cost him 50 cents a mile to commute to work. He didn't care about his
vehicle emissions, but he parked that car because he described it as
throwing dollar bills out the window as he drove to work.

Giant pickup trucks and SUVs are likely losing their luster even though
their mileage has been forced to have been improved since the 2000s.

Gas prices have been kept low because the mileage restrictions on
vehicles have decreased consumption. The US is among the top 3 oil
exporting nations. China is the only country that imports more oil than
the US imports. US oil companies can make more money selling US oil and importing oil from other countries. The US imports as much oil as it
exports, and if you count refined products (gasoline and diesel) exports
are around 50% higher. Some portion of the refined products come from imported oil, so we are exporting the imported oil. Trump still wants
to increase oil production in the US.
