Could someone tell me anything about Martin de Tyr ( or Van Tyr/of
Tyr, etc.)? I recently read "The Island of the Day Before" by Umberto Eco, and ran upon this name again. He is there attributed with placing the
0 meridian at the Holy Islands.
I first encountered this name in the movie (yes) 1492 where Columbus
tried to convince the Church that his plan would be fruitful, using, among others, the calculations of Martin de Tyr.
I have tried the Encyclopedia Britannica and other dictionaries.
I'm neither a student nor a teacher of history but I'm very interested and have never encountered his name anywhere before. Asking just out of curiosity.

    Hi Markus!
It is probably "Marin" and not "Martin", it appears to be sometimes but very rarely with a "t". However, Marin de Tyr was a greek great geographer who influenced others works. His research was well known at Columbus time which he read when he was hesitating about living or not.
