Looking at Chester marriage register (page 120) for the marriage
1877-8-20 of Joseph Charmeley to Mary Nixon (Widow - nee Shallcross),
and in the margin has been written

    ___
    don't
    publish
    in
    P. Mag.
    ___

I presume it means the parish magazine!

Just a curiosity. I can't see anything untoward about the marriage to
explain why it shouldn't be so published; just I've not seen such a note before!

We must, of course, ensure that we display no bias. The bias I worry
about most is the bias against understanding.

Ah, that could make sense! Their first child together was I think long
enough after their marriage, and she _was_ a widow, but they may indeed
    have been cohabiting a while.

Probably at the request of the parties themselves, but there's litt;e
point in guessing why, unless one is researching that particular
family, when the reason might be important. Many people do such things
because of "privacy concerns" -- they don't want the neighbours to
know about what they regard as their private business.
