• How can humanity best protect itself from AI when AI becomes 10000---fold smarter than the smartest human?

A prime directive of maximizing benevolence
in the least intrusive way. It does this through
gentle persuasion on the basis of objective truth.

My 28 year goal has been to make
"true on the basis of meaning expressed in language"
reliably computable for the entire body of general knowledge.
The complete structure of this system is now defined.

The entire body of knowledge expressed in language is
comprised of two types of relations between finite strings:
    (a) *Axioms* Expressions of language that are stipulated to be true.

My system bridges the analytic/synthetic distinction by
expressly encoding all empirical "atomic facts" in a formal
language such as CycL of the Cyc project.

    (b) *Inference Rules* Expressions of language that are semantically
    entailed syntactically from (a) and/or (b).

So ask an AI "It seems that the AI alignment problem can be easily
addressed by the single directive of maximizing benevolence" and
    tell us how it answers.

Conmen maximise benevolence; and then they rip you off.

You seem to have failed to grasp the main point of what today's "AI"
means. It's not some little algorithm to paint cars on an assembly line,
nor slavishly translate languages as in John Searl's Chinese Room
thought experiment. Its whole intent is to create new fields, new
visions, new ways of looking at things. It has to roam completely out of
the box; it needs initiative, nous, access to the whole Internet and
freedom to scour it. It needs the uninhibited liberty of mind that we
    assume we humans have.

    Now, consider this.
A non-human intelligence arrives on Earth with the intention of saving
the planet. It surveys this biosphere, this ecosystem, and looks for corrupting influences. Would they be locusts, crocodiles, earth worms, vultures? No. Before all others it will be homo sapiens. We're the virus
on this planet; we're the destructive species that wipes out others and pollutes land and sea. While all other species are controlled within
nature's overall limits, we've climbed out of them. We can survive on
land, 'neath the sea, in space, on other planets; and rape them just as
    we have this one.

Simple answer for the alien intelligence; either curtail or eliminate
homo sapiens; put this blue planet back where it should be.

    Ed
